My site supervisor called me today.. seemed like a nice bloke... told me drainage is booked for this thursday (I assume that is all the pipe stuff they put in before the slab). Slab is due for next week.. so hopefully everything goes to plan. With your cut and fill, "drainage" is probably agricultu...

We've lost all the leaves off our jasmine and michelia, but both are showing signs of new growth. Our red cordylines have all gone a little brown, but are still growing. Jade plants are fine (aren't they always...?), palms are fine. Cherry has lost all its leaves on one side, but it still growing on...

Someone on the radio yesterday was saying that in light of what's happened this weekend, they may well reconsider their standing assertion that a properly prepared and defended house is the safest place to be. We don't have a fire plan at our place, save for knowing what we'd grab, how we'd get out,...

Nice work! By the way, I see there's temporary fencing on the lot to the rear of your property. If you have temporary fencing as a cost in your contract, and if you don't want it, it's worth following it up--Whittlesea Council doesn't require temporary fencing. We got a ~$2,000 credit on ours. Handy...

Looks to me like a Dracaena draco , but I'd wait til the professionals make an appearance before making any decisions! If it is a dracaena, you're in luck--they're wonderful trees, tend to grow up a certain distance (if my memory serves it's typically 2-3 metres), then branch out to create a nice ca...

So, who would fix their home loan rates for 3 years if the rate was 3.99%? Mmm...probably would consider fixing a portion of the loan, but I'd be checking the news to see what chance there was priced into the market of the rates going lower, and in addition I probably wouldn't fix until sometime af...

Yes thanks we are very happy with the door. This particular facade doesn't have a side window in the entrance so we needed to bring in some light. We were torn between clear or frosted, but ended up going with frosted due to privacy concerns. I was a bit concerned that the frosting would stop too m...

Hi Nonie-- To turn them into pictures, edit your post and add "" to the end--but without the quotation marks. That should solve your problem. :) --Mike

Aside from anything else, isn't it also true that when rates are at their rock bottom, that banks' fixed packages will be somewhat less attractive than when rates are just "on the way down"? Might be worth seeking to fix your loan (or, a portion thereof) just before rates go to the bottom. Find a fi...

Very nice! I like the door especially. I can't believe how long it took us to choose our front door, it was one of the toughest choices in the house! --Mike

Congratulations! The frame will be started before you know it! I hope everything goes smoothly from here. :) If you can get in by Christmas that would be fantastic. Nothing like the first Christmas in a new house! :D --Mike

:D My parents built twice when I was a kid--once when I was eight and once when I was fourteen. They were both awesome adventures. I collected random bits and pieces from the construction sites, at which my parents just smiled and nodded and said "there's a good boy", whilst thinking "we'll throw it...

Looks good Aido! I really like the Denver design (from the outside) for a house on a corner. Unfortunately it just doesn't fit on most blocks! That notwithstanding, there were two reasons we didn't fall in love with it--the separation of the master bedroom from the rest of the house, and the closed-...

Yeah, we recalled seeing a slab under the decking at the display home in Berwick, but when the slab was poured, no slab in the alfresco out the back. We double-checked the plans--sure enough, no slab on the plans. Should have picked that up, really--although with any house build there's bound to be ...

My biggest piece of advice would be not to settle for or sign anything with which you are the slightest bit uncomfortable. It might be scary, but it's usually a better decision in the long run. In addition, if you don't like the person you're dealing with at a particular builder, say so, and get som...

Not sure whether it's the case in Queensland, but down here in Victoria there are a few bigger builders who are willing to let you go on-site to do stuff yourself. If you trawl through the home-building threads here you may well find some. M3tricon (our builder) won't let anyone onsite who isn't one...

We went out to the block last Monday to check what was going on, and sure enough, the frame--including the roof--was completed! It was a little surreal seeing all the roof lines, realising that this is going to be our home. :) So this is what the place looked like with the frame all finished last we...
