There was zero drainage on the block - not even stormwater connection - and significant tree coverage. The block was cleared and then it rained heavily for 6 weeks afterwards and the water had nowhere to go, it has just sat there in the first 800mm of soil above the heavy clay. It doesn't even flow...
Ok sounds very difficult, water is probably ponding against the retaining wall as you say. Good luck

The water-logged soil is much more prominent on the lower (left) side and particularly so at the back of the site - there is no overland flow from neighbouring properties due to house walls and other infrastructure. So the flow is contained within the site and the water is settling at the low point...
Then a cut off drain is probably not going to be as effective as a standard agi drain and even then may not work if the...

Thanks @insider - appreciate the info. By cut off drain, do you mean a deep trench through the site with something non-permeable to carry water away? The builder has suggested the ag drains sit in trenches that are not back-filled (ie. left exposed) - will this work or do you think a different desi...
No it's basically an agi drain but with builders plastic on one side of the trench(the side you are trying to protect)....

Legendary A sand pad won't work and it will make the drainage worse. All you are doing is creating a pool underneath your house.Water flows across the top of the natural clay then when you did a pit and then fill it with sand the water will pond in it leaving you with a water problem for the life of...

The paving complies with AS2870 so they question can be asked of the builder did they provide adequate drainage by grading the soil way from the building as required in AS2870? This would prevent the water from traveling under the paving back to the slab. If you can get photos of the site during con...

Robbie 55 An important bit of info is if you are building on highly reactive soil the ground next to the slab should be graded away, not built up with fill to grade away but be scrapped away sloping to a agi or cut off drain. This is a requirement of the as2870 but was ignored during the drought gr...

Yes connected paths is best. Just make sure your concretor knows what he is doing and is licensed. Don't use some weekend warrior or someone's old mate. so might be worth a second opinion from a different engineer. I agree @insider given the site goes from rock to deep fill. I know that the design states that the pier siting is indicative only but I would personally expect more guidance given the 625mm deep edge beams and rock at 200mm @ BH1. .

I know some engineers who might consider this type of footings (below) and others who would agree with the engineer who designed your footing so might be worth a second opinion from a different engineer. https://forum.homeone.com.au/u/58505_1594546159.png
