Mm true. We're about an hour from Newcastle. Most of the solar battery I'm talking will be setup/designed by me, like my current solar battery proof of concept setup (2 panels, car batteries, enough to power a shed). I'd envisaged mostly using small, cheap/easy to replace inverters etc for most circ...

Not sure which is the best forum for this, so here goes. Planning a new house build soon, and my thought was to run extra power cabling in house to create different circuits for low/medium/high draw appliances, with all separately breakered at the meter board. Then over time add more solar/battery a...

Fair enough. And if it adequately measured, sounds a lot simpler to just clip one on

Our house has a Saturn South ESBox, which was installed free some time ago (we qualified for something). It does a good job of capturing fairly real-time data (think it polls every 5 seconds, and I hacked it to pipe directly into my home automation every minute)

Just curious if you found a power meter solution? In the current ancient miners cottage house we live in, we got a Saturn South power monitoring thing installed in our meter box (by Our Green Home). I can check real time power at any time on their website dashboard, costs (if I've defined a tariff)...
I have bought a monitoring kit from efergy (Link ). It was reasonably inexpensive and it looks good from the marketing,...

We have planned a dedicated media/network cupboard, which will contain all hubs and routers and our printer. Other connected items, which must all be able to be controlled by our IOS devices (so-called internet of things) include: * smart thermostats * smart smoke/CO2 detectors * remote controlled ...

Hi, has anyone got somfy motors for your blinds/curtains? If so, have you found a way to operate the blinds without using the somfy remote or mylink app? Thanks, I haven't, however from memory openHAB has a Somfy plugin

Decided to go with Somfy thinking they are well known brand and will be easy to incorporate into the home automation eco system but I guess I am wrong... Somfy uses more proprietary stuff and not as easy to integrate as I thought... research continues.... As mentioned by picto, depends on your HA s...

Thanks, our current ancient miners cottage home gets by on a single 600VA UPS, however it has most of the tech concentrated near the line into the house so it's easy. Our UPS needs shouldn't be large - the power outages here are infrequent and likely only flicker to 1 duration. It just got frustrati...

Hey all, We're planning a build, and I'm doing the automation. In this I thought to include a decent UPS to support the automation options and keep the home server, link, etc up during an outage. My thoughts were that assuming we get 3 phase power we would use 2 phases for home zoning of power, spre...

My idea (just based on some of how our current old miners cottage home is), is a controllable curtain opener/closer. Not standard style (sideways slide open/closed) though - this "curtain" is a room separator in an opening that has no doorway. So I envisage it winding a spool tight which h...

Would there be enough interest if I start a thread on Roll Your Own HA devices (with RPi/Arduino/ESP etc)? I visit Whirlpool for more technical discussions but I will be very interested if you start a thread here... Ditto. Given new house build I suspect I'll soon be on here (almost) as much as my ...

Yeah think I'll have to start seriously looking at some of the arduino projects. If I was in the USA I'd possibly consider cloud based weather data, however I've found AU ones seriously lacking. Yeah, not bad if i couple the wind sensor to the weather station. I wonder if they have a non zwave one (just standard wifi or ethernet connectivity). To date reading HA forums about zwave has made me leery of it's reliability/complexity, where my current wifi device tinkerings have been rock solid ...
