We both work full time, my husband did take some long service leave here and there and I came out whenever I could weekends and afternoons. It took us 18 months,...we weren't rushing or on a time schedule as we didn't want that extra pressure. We found that we were waiting on trades to (a) come out ...

Hi, We owner built a PAAL kit home 5 years ago. We didn't hire a builder but managed the trades and did what parts we could ourselves. In the end at full completion we had spent the cost of the kit again, so double to completion. Our kit came supplied with most things including the kitchen.

Beetaloo and BStar have nailed it - you need to be on site most of the time, even if it's just to keep an eye on contractors. There were many occasions during our build that it paid off being on site because we were able to pick up on potential problems before they became full blown issues.

Hi Trixee, We investigated this when we were building, we even called into a number of mills on our way up to Brisbane one trip and asked about pricing etc. What we found was the mills were quoting a pretty high price per sqm - around $65 at the time (3-4 years ago)......there was even one mill prep...

Hello again!! I'm still here.....and we're still plodding away with the finishing off stuff.. It seems that holidays are the most productive times for us. Christmas and New Year saw some small progress made in our front yard. We had planned on having a brick/iron fence but after getting stuffed arou...

Hi RuffTuff, Your vision and use of materials is out of this world!! I have to feel a little envious of your wife for having such a driven and competent partner (and I do know the effort she'd be putting in would be above the norm too) Well done and I have really enjoyed following this thread.

Thanks Wilesy for your comments. I have taken the time to document our journey in the ambitious ( and maybe a little conceited  ) dream that maybe someone will benefit from our experience lol!! When we first started we struggled with the question of "What order do we do things in??"…...

Patience is a virtue.....remember the mess with our range hood installation? Well we finally got around to getting a plasterer in to fix it up. TBH we pretty much forgot about it and it was only when visitors commented on the unfinished state of it that we were reminded. Anyway it's nice to have tha...

Hi Stewie, Thanks for your reply. Here are a couple of photos of the offending spots - there are only two that we can see as the efflorescence is occurring on the inside of the brickwork. I'm not sure if our bricks are hard or soft....I could try throwing one at someone and ask them lol!! But seriou...

Hi Guys, I'm after a bit of advice with regards to painting over external bricks that are showing signs of efflorescence. We are planning on painting the bricks with Wattyl Solarguard as we are after a more "Olde Worlde" gloss smooth finish rather than the more modern matte/gritty/sandy fi...

Hi AJB, I'm picturing sitting on your veranda looking out onto the lovely countryside :D It all looks good - my only question would be natural light in the front hallway….are you having some sort of skylight? I'd just be concerned that it may be a little dark. Best of luck and I really look forward ...

Hi gav89z, That is the order we did things….bricks, plumbing, electrical. Didn't have any problems, we saw it as the safest way to do things in light of there being a lot of supplies stolen around us, especially electrical wiring being stripped after it had been installed. Plumber and electrician ha...
