Love that frame! :D What happens with the stabbed pipes is the plumbers run the pipes too close to the slab. Then the concreters punch their stakes through them while putting the formwork up. We had a couple like this at our place - I've only just found another one too while putting in some drainage...

Not sure about steel frames. I think they were offering free upgrades at one stage. Steel is better for termites etc but could be an issue near water (rust).
