Hello guys. I’m starting a thread I hoped I would never have to but I find myself in a situation where I have lost all faith in my incompetent builder. This is a big building company in Melbourne I am talking about, not some small operator. The problems started from the very beginning with ****** fr...

Hmmm... sorry for being so insensitive. Yes donuts, you’re right- shuddering is extreme and not what I experienced which was more of a loud sigh and a comment about it being such a shame that a pretty house would not have bulkheads level with doors. I’m sure your house is so beautiful though that I ...

I enquired about a third coat and was quoted $1000 for a 20 square house so you are getting better value by comparison. One thing with volume builders is that most of them only apply two top coats straight to plaster without any undercoat as recommended by paint manufacturers. A Solver rep actually ...

I have 2740 ceilings and 2340 doors and sliding robes throughout. I know the difference between 2590 and 2740 may not seem like much on paper but in reality it is a huge improvement. I would not get 2740 ceilings though unless you also raise the doors as the house seems out of all proportion otherwi...

I also have scratches on my Colorbond gutters and fascia as they were left on the footpath for two days prior to installation due to lack of space onsite! :( When I raised this with my builder I was told they would be touched up at the end of construction which is something I am unhappy about as I h...

Thanks for the responses. I knew it was a bit of a long shot but I figured the BCA might have some guidelines on the matter as it seems to for everything else (and that someone might know what they were as I don’t have access to the BCA and couldn’t find anything online). Anyway, I actually went to ...

Hello guys I am hoping that someone can urgently reply to my query regarding external taps as my bricklayers are due to commence bricklaying tomorrow. I realised today that an external tap is affixed unusually high on the house (at about 1 metre). My building plans do not stipulate the height of the...

Oh you poor dear, I know exactly how you feel. Both my partner and I were in tears at our colour selection appointment (granted, our sales consultant * to our face about what colour selection items were included in the contract price)! If on a budget my advice would be to only upgrade things which a...

Hello guys, Sorry to have missed you all on Sunday- it was not too long since I had returned from my snow trip and I was a bit worse for wear. I’m feeling a bit better now and not limping around anymore! Wizard- I’m about half way through my 5 year degree but I haven’t been following the course stru...

According to Wikipedia, the new inhabitants lead a cow through all the rooms while chanting to their fairies. They then boil some of the cow's milk. Wikipedia also mentions specifically that cow urine is used, though not how and for what purpose... I sure am glad I'm not your next door neighbour!

Hey Guys... Yeah it sucks when things don’t go according to plan. I can appreciate that competition amongst volume builders has driven down profit margins and compromised quality but I don’t think it’s too much to ask that the build is completed according to plans and is compliant with BCA regulatio...

Hello guys, I just wanted to see if anyone can shed some information on the effects of pouring a concrete slab in cold weather? I tried searching the archives here but I could only find information about pouring a slab in hot weather. Basically I was surprised to find that my slab was poured today. ...

My house design had an ensuite skylight in the original plans and I absolutely hated the idea, especially seeing as the ensuite ran off the WIR so it was already quite a dark space! The ensuite was actually positioned on an external wall but the vanity and mirror was placed on that side and I couldn...

None of us can tell you what your kitchen bulkhead will look like because we don’t know the depth of your overhead cupboards! If they are the same depth as the bulkhead then you will have option 1 and if the bulkhead is deeper, you will have option 2. From your photo I think the bulkhead looks deepe...

Indeedy... plus a 400mm retaining wall down one side too! I have had issues with the builder to date but lately the cards have been falling my way so I may yet end up happy with the whole process! They have now gone from 2 out of 5 to 3 stars in my books haha...

Hey guys... Well my SS confirmed that the holes are piering after all! Hey guys, thanks for the replies... Well I’m stumped! I checked my slab drawings and there are no provisions for piering so I’m pretty sure that can’t be it. From what I researched on the net I think they may be soakwells?? Although that too would be odd because they’re dug where I have downpipes re...
