It's interesting to me how few actually insulate this space. Even the external walls in this section not insulated. However acoustic batts sound better no idea if they are much better. You need some sort of dampner on the joists between the structure flooring Maybe rubber strip's. I think csr do a g...

For DIY options CBUS does not even get close to the options available. CBUS is just ridiculous on pricing. Anyone should be able to do their own "programming" . For any home automation it starts with cat 6 or similar cabling around the house. Either decentralised or centralised. Anything t...

the pipes should be installed whilst you have access to the bearers and joists. Lagging all pipes if using radiators, although if in conditioned space maybe not. What sort of pellet boiler did you buy? What was the pricing? Good luck with the hydronic heating. Pulpo

Firstly I would not install electric coil in slab, too many people do not run it because of cost. I have installed hydronic heating for small places including 40 sqm. It would take two zones 200m, at around $2.20m plus installation. But cost to install is not cheap. Boilers cost less than $3,000 plu...

I'm sure a question asked allot. If one is after dg thermally broken aluminium windows is there a rough m2 rate (supply only)? Does one have a guide for the comfort glass or low e per m2 instead of dg? When I have a client being told low e glass is better than dg, I need empirical evidence to suppor...

You mentioned DIY Have you looked at Arduino Now that is DIY, cheap possibilities seem limitless. Or other microcontrollers, Beaglebone Black The idea of having the controller costing $50 is amazing. Of course you still have to program. Good luck. Pulpo

Benex blocks were on the New inventors some time ago, the original factory closed (i think), ambitious business model. But at $66m2 is a good price. Lock Blocks by baine are mortarless and cheaper still. Boral have a mortarless block but more expensive. I think mortarless block with polystyrene stuc...

Not exactly sure what you are asking. The more thermal mass the better generally speaking with winter sun, assuming its insulated from outside. So a reverse brick veneer house is better than double brick. So a trombe wall and all concrete floors excellent thermal mass assuming insulated. Good luck P...

Earth covered homes have the potentially to be far more energy efficient. Plenty of info on the web. Earth shelter houses. I have an old book by Sydney Baggs. The diurnal temperature is very good. You must solve. Water proofing Ventilation Light All very easy to address. Cheers Pulpo

Helped a mate "remove" a pool. We drained the pool straight into the storm water. We cut the edge with concrete saw you could hire a guy to do this. Then removed so all level with the ground. Then filled the pool with sand, cheaper to use clean fill, just advertise for clean fill needed in...

I would go with solar evacuated tubes, split system. North facing unshaded, western Sydney no booster should be required. If going with electric for cooking, then other than bbq no need for gas. Access charge is over $200 pa. Have the gas line installed but do not connect. Its probably more green wi...

Short answer yes. Daikin is rather common over seas. A wood boiler is another possibility, especially the wood gasfication type. Finally I would suggest solar boosted with a small heat pump as back up. Sanden heat puimp CO2 Pulpo

When you xps which is extruded polystyrene and the best insulation other than aero gels. Not sure how you place it in walls other than spray / injection. Not sure if spray foam is XPS. Normally XPS is placed on the outside of walls and rendered. Inside walls recommend EPS like bean bag balls. Good L...

Sorry further read your posting. If the house is already built this is just a reno then highly recommend under slab insulation. 50mm of EPS (expanded polystyrene) then 50mm of an almost self leveling screed. This is almost standard in Europe for in slab heating. Good Luck Pulpo

If only looking at what the code is, then unless you live in alpine region unlikely to require under slab insulation. However build with waffle pod slab and under slab insulation is taken care of. If a raft and beam slab then I would consider EPS foam under the slab at least 50mm. I would use XPS fo...
