Screed sand & cement to ensure a fall, Use plastic packers to keep battens from surface Coat underside of decking with paint (similar color), this will reduce cupping close to the ground.

Use a mortar mix (brickies sand and cement) to lay the pavers, allow 50mm min for the bed. Set up the first and last paver to required heights. Set up two string lines slightly wider than these and lay to the lines.

Second Pic looks like you excavated below footings? If left for 3 months this could have caused the failure.

Your deck timbers may be treated but what you have done is breached any termite barrier for the existing house. levels are to high near existing wall, Recipe for disaster. A least have a physical gap at the wall so you can visually monitor.

Hi, Questions: Paving/Tiling - we have had 2 landscapers and a paving guy out to look at the job (all told us different things). So we are not sure if we should be buying pavers and laying on a road base foundation, if so what thickness of pavers do we need? Or should we be concreting (how thick?) ...

In regard to levels, we use either the old school optical (two man job), or a laser level. But we don't use them for making survey plans, only on the construction side. We use surveyors as most councils require that they are registered. Software side, download a free trial (fully functional 30 days)...
