Re: Double glazing

Our energy report hasn't come back yet, but we've been told to expect alot of dbl. glazing. Spoke to the window manufacturer directly (supplier of our builder) and he quoted around $15K extra. He recommended doing the entire house no matter what the energy report states, particularly the up stairs. ...

does anyone know the cost of a screw pile?
Building A New House

Sounds about right. We got quoted around $300 per meter depth per screw pile. So in your case yours must be around 2.5m deep. And we need to go deep which has made our site costs $$ I guess they don't call them SCREW piles for no reason :P

Owner Builder cheaper than Builder
Owner Builder Forum

Yes, owner building for someone with no trade or building experience can be daunting and will take longer but hopefully the end result is a better product. You are also not limited to one builders products (i.e kitchens, vanities etcc) Another suggestion would be to find a builder that can build to ...

Knocking out a non-load bearing wall.. ideas on cost?

Any chance you can do this yourself. Seriously, start by removing all the plaster (being mindful of any wiring) then shouldn't be too hard to cut the framework and remove it. If there are any wires call a sparky to get it re-routed and then call in a plasterer to patch up.

House cost to land value ratio - avoid overcapitalising
Building A New House

I'd suggest building the best house you can comfortably afford with the features you need. Particularly if you plan on staying long term. I have a friend who has extended a fairly new home. Definitely over capitalised, but it will suit his needs (runs business from home). It is a long term prospect ...

Generally speaking your builder would handle all that. Unless of course you are an owner builder. Why?

Gas will give more heat and cost much less to run. Gas if you can get it.

I'd suggest 300 is the width and 500 the height. That's how I'd lay them. But there are no rules when it comes to imagination 8)

Be aware that the volume builders are great at marketing and use interior designers to dress the interiors. They certainly look WOW when you visit them. But, try to imagine the houses empty, then you start to see how cheap and unimaginative they really are. Corners are cut everywhere, But hey, we al...

I'm also in two minds about the desalination plant. Yes it will guarantee water supply for Melbourne, but at huge environmental and economic cost. Also, will rural victoria benefit from this? Why not build more catchments? SImple, because we can't predict the weather.... Do you know that it will ra...

Is this an attempt to save the govt. money on tank rebates? I guess now that they are going to build a hugely expensive desalination plant, perhaps they believe tanks are not required!? This govt. seems to react and deflect and change directions as quickly as the weather. I personally am not for wat...

Yep, did a bathroom renovation and had the bathtub re-enamled. Looked absolutely brand new. I highly recommend it. It isn't cheap but should be well under the cost of replacement. The only things to consider are:- - Do you like the shape of the existing bath - Does it have any dents or is it warped,...

Have used stopnoise in our old house and the difference is quite remarkable. Just be aware that deep bass sounds like truck air brakes are not reduced as much as the higher frequency sounds. If you go to a showroom, they will most likely have a demo consisting of a cd player encased in their glazing...

Flood/Water Proofing your home

If you really love the area/position and you can somehow justify living there, then I guess insurance is your only real insurance. There are some now that offer flood insurance (Shannons for example). Glad to hear that you survived fairly unscathed aside from the car.
