Chuq, we have modwood on sustainable house. It's horribly hot on bare feet in summer. And it's still plastic - not degradable and I'm not aware of any options for reuse at end of its life. It was the best and most affordable product on the market at the time, and I liked the idea of creating a marke...

Okay, so technically this probably belongs in paving and concreting, but I figure the folk in landscaping are more likely to be able to recommend a paver for this job. Everyone over in the other forum is talking concrete and driveways! We're looking for someone who can help us with the next s...

Hi everyone It's been a while since I was active in the forum, but I thought some of you might be interested to know that the house we built in 2010 (to which homeone forum members made many, many contributions) is featured in this edition of Sanctuary magazine. Also, I will be speaking – with our b...

Came across this website today. While strictly speaking, its focus is public places, I can see lots of ideas for creating playspaces between all our vegie gardens. Thought some of you might be similarly inspired. http://www.freeplaynetwork.org.uk/playlink/exhibition/playgrounds/murergaarden1.htm e.

Of course, I couldn't resist going to look for that other thread. At least on Homeone, my procrastination benefits somebody! I was actually wrong, it's a 1930s house. But the thread might still be worth a look: forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=36965&hilit=1920s Good luck....

If I hadn't had my heart set on dark cabinets, I would have had a dark timber bench top. Check these folks out: http://www.bowerbirdtimber.com/timbers/slabs A friend has a light coloured timber benchtop and it has water marked terribly. It would come up nicely with a bit of work, but it was enough t...

Hooooo-bloody-ray, we found a light shop in Melbourne that worked for us! ::celeb:: http://www.melbournelighting.com.au Rebecca was incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful about the look we want, our budget and also how light behaves. And it helped heaps that they had a good range of non-standard st...

thanks kay. very nice lights! how do you get around the 230v issue? does it mean you need a transformer on everything? fortunately, we found a fantastic lighting shop in Kilsyth on the weekend - all our lighting problems solved! phew. might see if i can think of a place to use one or two of the germ...

Hi kayandandy Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. I guess we could live with something more primitive while we wait for it to arrive. The one I saw that I liked was on Amazon UK. Daylight robbery in Oz indeed ... I've never been to Howards, but I was gobsmacked at the mark ups on stuff that I hav...

I've been thinking for a while that old fridges, de-gassed and with their doors & motors removed, would make great wicking beds. We have a place here in Melbourne that refurbishes donated fridges to sell/give to people on low incomes (Phoenix Fridges). I reckon they probably have some that are b...

Thanks Donnam, just checked can't see anything. Just realised that I probably wasn't clear enough in my post. I'm looking for something that is both a dispenser and a storer. Having trouble with internet connection today (why does rain affect it?) but will try to post a link to the UK ones I found. e.

Any tips on where to find one in Melbourne ... preferably without a magazine rack attached?! I have googled, but I can only find olde worlde charme ones. There are some cool looking ones from the UK, but I thought I'd tap into the collective shopping knowledge of Homeone before buying something on s...

We're having a custom design and build, and thanks in part to this thread, we've remembered most things. But I am Terribly Sad that I didn't think to ask for our doors to be rebated (in this case, rebating is when you cut out a bit of the slab so that the door sill is flush with the floor). We have ...

I bought practically everything in one 3.5 hour session at Reece in Heidelberg. Dropped in to Tradelink in North Fitzroy afterwards "just in case" and experienced such terrible service that I vowed never to buy a thing from them. Service wise, I do suspect it's really a case of who you get...

Our 9.1 stars has been achieved in part by reverse brick veneer on our west, east and north walls. It's not all where it should be ... in the bedrooms it would have been better on the internal walls, but that was the only place for the wardrobes. :( We have low embodied energy on the outside, then i...

I agree with you Dymonite about increasing pressure for plant increases rather than trading credits. The other good thing about green power is that the price alone forces you to think twice about turning up the heater! We have 100% green (wind) power in the awfully cold rental unit we're in now, and...

Hi Nirmal You might be fit as a fiddle til you're 80, but I think your approach is very sensible ... if nothing else, your less abled 50 year old friends might appreciate it! :) In addition to what others have suggested, I'd be asking the local council or occupational therapist at a community health...

Grandview are making our low VOC kitchen too. We're really happy with their price, and even more so with their willingness to work outside their comfort zone with new products. I gather they've just decided (on a price basis) to use E0 for all their whiteboard. This is a great decision, means everyo...
