The kitchen all up, minus appliances, was about $37,000. That included design, cabinets, benchtops, splashback, demolition & building works, installation, electrician & plumber, plastering, plus disposal of the old kitchen & all rubbish. We had several lights moved and a heap of LED stri...

Almost ten years on, we finally had enough of our rubbish kitchen, so ripped it out and started over. "The sink needs to be moved", I insisted. "I want an island bench and it only has to shift a metre or so, how much can it possibly cost?" Apart from the cost, I do not rec...

Just a heads-up for anyone who uses Photobucket to host photos, they've just banned third party hosting (unless you're prepared to pay them $400 a year), so images posted here using their third party code will no longer work. Bad move on their part, but there's not much to be done. It probably only ...

Absolutely. It's what we were originally going to do, but we ran out of funds to do the robes before moving in. Alternatively, if you're using IKEA units, you can have the builder set the shelf at a height that suits you, and just slot your units in underneath (the rails come out easily enough if yo...

After eight years in our not-so-new-any-more home, we've finally gotten around to adding some much-needed extra storage. The difference it makes is amazing. We already added an attic ladder and 10m2 of flooring in the roof a few years back (with access from the garage), which is great for rarely use...

I'd vote for a north-facing alfresco room and living rooms too. Ours is at the side and has the family/dining room on one side, the lounge on another and the study plus our ensuite on the third. One other thing to consider, if neighbouring homes have already been built (or if plans are available) is...

We have paving. WA. So no cement slab under the paving. I know Kek has large sandstone pavers and she is in Melbourne. Don't think they had a slab under theirs but I'm not 100% sure. Nope, we do have a slab under ours. The alfresco room had a slab already, and the landscaper added an extra section ...

We used Into Blinds for our plantation shutters and couldn't be happier. Prompt service, courteous staff, competitive price and excellent quality. We use baits, but put them in our roof space where there's no chance of anybody's pets getting hold of it. In the past, we've also put them behind the fridge (we don't have pets), which is a spot kids can't get to unless they're freaky super-strong mutant babies. But in the roof is my preferred spot...

Nah, they're usually stolen in large numbers, so it has to be scrap metal. About a hundred were stolen in one night from our estate when we were building, and the police said there were gangs known to be operating. Must be copper in them?

We have a sewer easement running along our back fence. We've laid step stone pavers in gravel, as Maximus has suggested, so if access is ever required, it's easy to pull up a few pavers and scrape away some gravel. You're not restricted to lawn where you don't want paths though - you could create ga...

Ours isn't steel framed, but we recently had an attic ladder installed, with 10m2 of flooring included, for storage purposes. You could contact one of the companies that install these and ask whether they're suitable for steel frames. This is the mob we used: http://www.atticgroup.com.au/

You're unlikely to have anything to worry about. And worst case scenario, if any CGT applied to the sale of your existing home, it would only apply to the period of time during which you weren't living there...which would probably be a few weeks or months while you're selling. And then you'd still g...

I love it when people take my recipes and do their own thing with them. :) I don't have a lot of vegetarian recipes, but the ones I have are good...and should be easy to veganise. Have you tried making nut cheese? My friend Sara is mad about it, she blogs at fittoblog.org
