You only need to fill the holes. Looking at the pictures it's all pretty sound. If the paper is still intact then it's fine just to tile over it. If there are areas that have ripped out then just fill them and scrape them flush. It doesn't need to be a perfect finish like you would if you are paint...

It actually doesn't look that bad. Just scrape off the loose bits of paper and any little dags of old tile adhesive and then tile over it all. If there are any large chunks or damaged areas you could patch them with some base coat, but the pictures look ok. Thanks for that, it is actually pretty go...
