It's always good practice to put in safety trays where applicable as its purpose is to catch or slow down the water leak you inevitably going to have when your drain blocks up. I think the installer is thinking of drain traps where on the positive side of the coil it's not required to drain correctly as opposed to the negative side of the coil where the system won't drain without it and potentially suck in air through the drain. hth Re: need advice from air conditioning installers 3Sep 30, 2016 10:03 pm I'm sorry to say, but that is a pretty poor installation and I haven't even started on the safety tray. I don't really see domestic installations, but even so that is a pretty poor attempt. Looks like they've just chucked the unit in and put some frame bracing strap in for decoration. I would expect to see the unit properly suspended from the top chord of the trusses with threaded rod, unistrut etc. And definitely a safety tray. Using hanging trap is perfectly fine everyone uses that on domestic installs, uni-strut and rod is more used on commercial installs. Looks like they should of hung it a bit higher the what they have. Could be worse in terms that the real ******* installers you will find just sit the unit on timbers Re: need advice from air conditioning installers 5Oct 01, 2016 9:46 pm Just because everyone uses it doesn't make it right, it just means they're all as rough as each other. For example, I've lost count of how many air con installations I have defected over the last few years for using pair coil on commercial jobs even though the insulation on pair coil doesn't comply with the building code. None of the installers knew it was wrong. Is there someone who I can use to inspect the aircon and ducting that's been installed before Gyprock stage? His only concern was the lack of the tray and wanted to install one if the original installer wouldn't do it. Based on his response it looks like I will have to pay for it which involves on tiles being moved and the sarking. looks like some installers do it and others don't bother. i am not sure if the unit is installed with the fall to the left or whether its just the way he took the photo.
