Having said that it would be unlikely to happen in any of the big chain stores with their security being a disincentive (card skimmer gangs aren't keen on setting off alarms because it tends to make security check camera footage which kinda gives the game away). It's your smaller boutique/local store that I'd be careful of - half of the time they have no idea how their system works beyond from turning it on and entering their access codes, especially the ones staffed by inexperienced younger people on evening/weekend shifts and some of them are occasionally rather what you call loose with said access codes (ie. they enter them where you can see what they are doing) so they would be ripe for card skimmer/scanner replacement. p.s. does't everyone use their wallet/purse to cover the keypad while they are typing in their pin? I know I sure do... Actually, it has been in the major supermarket chain and T@rget in the local area it is happening.... 18months ago we were on the receiving end on our credit card (to the tune of $790) after a transaction at Maccas... In Perth, we had a McDonald's store that had a skimmer used on an eftpos handheld unit. They managed to net lots of money from bank accounts not credit cards. Apparently a hand held unit is set up to skim and record pin numbers and is then swapped in for the original, doesn't matter if you hide the keypad it still records the key presses. The crims then come back latter and pick up the modified hand unit and glean all the info they need. Don't think its just small stores, in fact the larger the volume if customers the better. The banks should really look into investing in anti-skimming devices on ATMs to distrub the signals of these skimming activities to protect users. |
