We have finally made a start on our home and found that the levels shown on our architectural plan didn't actually reflect what was out on site.

To cut a long story short, we have had to dig an extra 200 m3 of our backyard to avoid having high retaining walls.

Can anyone share how much they payed for bulk excavation costs per m3 so that I don't get ripped off? Ideally, please include disposal costs as well.

Did you get a site survey done before the architect drew up the plans? If so, they should pay for their error, and confirm inw riting that the additional soil will ot cause other issues in and around the block (ie drainage towards the house.

I did get a Land Surveyor to survey the site prior to drawing plans. These were given to the Architect so the error was by him who did not transpose the levels correctly on the side elevations showing less of a slope than there actually was.

Not sure if I can get anyone to pay for the error?

We have a hill in the middle of our building envelope which we may have to dispose of - we have been quoted $200 / truckload for disposal but have also been advised that a company may buy the soil which would be cheaper.

I've been quoted $300 per truck load.

Is it a big truck? If its a small truck then I'll need a few more trips. The bigger the better.

If its clean fill then you could probably sell it and make a profit...

$200 a load sounds about right if you are disposing of it at a council site.

If you can find someone who needs 200m3 of clean fill it should cost you a lot less.

We recently did the cut for our new house. Total excavated was about 90m3 of which 60m3 was taken away. It took them 3 hours from arrival to departure. You shouild be able to hire a large excavator, say 14 ton, plus tip truck and operators for around $250/hr. Time taken will depend on the proximity of the dump site.

I'd suggest you call some earthmoving firms for a qoute. They know where fill is required, and with a copy of the contour plan will work out exactly how much is to be excavated.

Matt, nobody pays for fill. The cost is always borne by the disposer. I have some more to dispose of and was told this in no uncertain terms when I asked him if he would like to come and get it !!!

A friend excavated 89 truckloads of dirt and was paid $10 per truckload.

He had to pay to dump 3 truckloads after he thought he had finished at clayton. This cost him $330 per truckload.

He lost $100 in the process...
