We have a carved box at the foot of our bed with spare blankets in it, we just lined it with paper... You might just be able to get away with sandpaper and a coat of gloss paint on the inside... It comes in handy also for throws cos I change mine colour wise winter to summer...

Can't sew for nuts, but why not use velcro strips on cushion and lid of box? They will keep it secure, only drawback would be that you can't turn the cushions over..... Alternatively you could use ties in some sort of arrangement, but they would drive me crazy...

If you didn't want to damage the lid, you could get a piece of ply the same size, glue foam to the top of the ply, wrap it in the fabric of choice and staple the fabric to the ply. Put another piece of fabric over the stapled sections to tidy it up and use upholstery tacks to keep in place.

We have a blanket box and we didnt line the inside with anything - it is smooth polished wood inside, blankets just go straight in it - not sure why it would need lining?

If it's going to be up against the base of your bed or against a wall, it won't matter if you just lift the lid with cushions - if they are a heavier than scatter (which they should be, covered with upholstery fabric) they should pretty much stay where they are... Easy. And yes, you really only need lining if you need to camouflage a rough interior or edges that can't be sanded and smoothed...?
