Hi,
I am trying to decide on which turf to lay and have narrowed my choices down to the following
Kikuyu
Velvetene
Plateau
If anybody has any of these would love to know what you think. Our house is in Tapping, WA.
Thanks

Hit landscape as the forum of choice and there you go. Put the kettle on or grab a coldie and get reading Its easy, just don't do anything you have ever done before Re: Lawn Choice 11May 07, 2011 12:29 am Thanks Fu, I have been reading alot of these threads and feel ready to go. I want to get it down asap as being a Brisbanite in Melbourne I am already feeling the cold. I have been assured by a number of sources that I should be fine and that the weather has not turned yet (yet my central heating is already starting to get a work out) It certinally has been very interesting reading your threads and what you say about feeding the soil does make a lot of sence and I am looking forward to some good results Lawn Choice 12May 07, 2011 8:45 am It's going to go yuck in the first few winters but with the right soil prep and a new approach to caring for turf it will get better every year. Organic turf care will ensure it doesn't ebb and flow constantly between going great then falling in a heap then looking great and so on. Each year it will get tougher and tougher to the winter. No fertilizers. Use liquid composts instead and use a range of different ones. Powerfeed, Charlie carp, go go juice and every now and then if it's going to chuck it down with rain, lob some blood and bone around. Essentially the same goes for buffalos and couches which also go yellow and yuck in winters. Constantly feed that soil. Even if you think abandon all ye hope, it bounces back. I haven't watered my lawn at all this summer and autumn. Virtually no rain in that time frame and the stuff is green again thanks the the return of morning dew. Re: Lawn Choice 14May 31, 2011 3:52 pm Fu Manchu Make sure you use Bentonite clay and some of Eureka composts "Premium compost mix". Anything less will result in a few issues. Zeolite and spongolite also should be added to the soil. These are not expensive and are there in the soil forever seemingly. They will allow a lawn to be hassle free into the future and greatly reduce its need for water which is something to think about if our winter rains fail again and we have no water in summer. If that happens, you'll thank me Hi Fu, I am going to be getting our lawn laid soon. Have requested Empire zoysia, will see if they can get it. Being a landscaping package, there are a few restrictions unfortunately. Otherwise I will be going with Palmetto. I will be getting zeolite and spongolite put in, as well as some kitty litter for the clay. However, they are including dynamic lifter. Will that suffice instead of premium compost mix, or certified soil etc>? If not, how much does the certified soils generally cost? How much of a difference will it make between dynamic lifter? Cheers Re: Lawn Choice 15May 31, 2011 11:39 pm deeps Fu Manchu Make sure you use Bentonite clay and some of Eureka composts "Premium compost mix". Anything less will result in a few issues. Cheers Even with a landscaping package, they will be willing to accommodate you if you pay the extra for it. Our landscaping package only included wintergreen couch. We said no thanks and got Sapphire Buffalo in the front and EZ in the back. Getting the organic compost will make all the difference...really. There's two pics I posted in the soft leaf buffalo thread comparing our turf and the neighbor's. His turf was laid on the plain old sandy soil with dynamic lifter. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=44969&start=20 Re: Lawn Choice 16Jun 01, 2011 1:18 pm Fair enough. I'm aware they are willing to change if you pay extra, was wondering if it was worth it, and based on that picture, it certainly is We are given wintergreen couch as well, but have requested EZ. Any reason you didn't get it at the front too? Also, how much did the organic compost cost? Cheers Re: Lawn Choice 17Jun 03, 2011 6:44 pm deeps Fair enough. I believe he got it from Gardener's Direct (a trailer load). Ah, the EZ...now in hindsight, I should have got it in the front as well. We only put it in the back because we wanted something nice for the kids to play on...but even after three months now, we can see that it is less trouble than the buffalo. There's a lot less weeds in it. Its color is fantastic. It grows slower (so less mowing). Requires less water. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd put it in the front as well...live and learn... Re: Lawn Choice 18Jun 05, 2011 9:12 pm And I've been reviewing quiet a few water reports and studies done in WA. You know those photos on the net that say "When you see it, you'll **** bricks!" well this applies. If you've loaded that soil with bentonite and zeolite you'll be so glad you did when the water stops. These studies are really confronting! If the public searched for them you'd be left scratching your head as too why you were not given better advice to start with by the nursery or the turf farm or the soil place. They all just carry on as if nothing was wrong while Rome burns. Anyway the compost, http://www.gardenersdirect.com.au/comme ... BGO!%2B%2B http://www.dsatco.com/PiggypostBulkBag/ ... roductName http://www.greenlifesoil.com.au/compost.htm But the KING is this guy http://www.eurekacompost.com/ and the best price Re: Lawn Choice 19Jun 05, 2011 9:13 pm BUy lots of Bentonite by either cleaning out the "Clay/clumping" cat litter shelf at your local IGA, or going to the farm supply shop and buying 4 or 5 or more bags of Bentonite Clay. Best investment you will make. Go to the pool shop for the Zeolite. Re: Lawn Choice 20Jun 05, 2011 9:22 pm If you do that, you'll be all like... http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd26 ... ecream.mp4 the leaves that are now underground go yellow, the tips that poke through photosynthesise and have chlorophyll, same reason they grow rhubarb in the dark. 5 5070 |
