We are looking to replace our two bay windows, which are timber, and basically rotten.
I was wondering what sort of ball park figure it would cost to replace them in
a) timber b) uPVC c) aluminium
and what people thought about how the aesthetics would be changed using each of these options?
The other important thing for us is that following replacement, we would want to guarantee we could re-use the plantation shutters fitted to the inside - is this possible with uPVC and aluminium ?
I have (hopefully) attached some pictures to show what I am trying to do and approximate measurements.
Sorry, but what do you mean by "stud" at each corner.
Would I be able to get double glazed units with timber ?
Thanks for the reply.
Neil
Hi
A stud is the vertical timber in your house frame. I am guessing that your bay window is 3 separate windows nailed into the house frame, rather than a complete assembled bay window.
If you plan to eventually replace all facade windows, then go with PVC IMO.
Ed
This might be a possibility, however, one of my caveats is that we can re-use out internal plantation shutters.
What's your take on whether
a) uPVC windows could be made to a similar sort of design as the existing timber ones b) we can re-attach the shutters to uPVC windows
Many thanks Ed.
Neil
Hi Neil
uPVC windows are not in any way customisable except for size. Having said that the profiles replicate heavy timber. Best bet is to measure your jambs, to get a feel for the differences.
Same goes for your plantation shutters. I would think that the top, bottom and side rails could be cut to fit within reason. So measure and check it out. If the shutters were to be too small then that would be a problem, but too big maybe they can be trimmed. Hopefully they are timber?

Hi again Ed,
for a bay window then, which I understamd is essentially 3 spearate windows, how (using uPVC) would the two side windows be joined to the middle window to provide a seal ? Would a uPVC bay window be installed as 3 separate windows, or as 1 complete unit ?
Many thanks
(oh, not sure if you follow football, but congrats on Sunderland staying up and with Newcastle going down it must have been pretty wild up on Tyneside!)

That was my original point - it looks like your bay windows are 3 separate windows, meaning there is a stud at each corner. That makes it easier. So you install 3 windows rather than one, and the gap/join is covered by timber - as it is now.

OK, so looking at your product sizes, if I was looking at double hung, 2 off 1543 x 610 and 1 off 1543 x 1450 - what sort of price would that be delivered to Sydney?
Do you have any contacts for installation in Sydney Metro area ?

I am sure that double hung will not provide enough cover for your shutter to attach. I have priced the awning or casement.
2 @ $400 each 1 @ $690
Standard sizes, includes timber colour to outside, white inside.
Courier or delivery at cost...
Sorry I don't know any installers in Sydney - a carpenter could easily do the job. But he should check measure and specify the size so he takes responsibility.
The window co you refer to uses Kommerling so the quality will be good.

Thanks Ed
Are you able to add colonial bars to the windows ?
I must admit, I do like the wood grain effect. On the website it Looks really good. Would like to see it in the flesh.
