Thanks for your invaluable advice in this thread. Wish I found this site a few months ago.
I’d like some expert advice on location of our bathroom lights.
Based on our experience with our existing ensuite (1.8m x 3m), I found that the IXL Sensation with CFL and two halogen lights were required to sufficiently light up the ensuite. Furthermore, the mirrors over the double basins include fluorescent lights which improve lighting of the face / removal of shadows. On that basis, I felt that our developments’ bathrooms and ensuites of similar size, would not have sufficient light with one IXL ‘3 in 1’, and so I was planning to specify the IXL plus two down LED ceiling lights in the room. I also thought that these LED lights should have gimbles to allow them to be angled to the mirror to better light the face. (post on pg13 Mar 28, 2016 09:17 useful)
However, recently I had to replace the CFL in the IXL, and used an Atom 9W R80 LED. With 860 lumens, I was surprised at how much light this LED has compared to the CFL which would not have lit the ensuite sufficiently. Combined with 4000K, the ensuite now has a completely different look.
So now I am not sure how to light our proposed ensuites and bathrooms. My questions are
- 1. How many ceiling lights are required for general lighting?
- a. Can we get away with one general light in a combined fan/heat/light product? What type of LED should be specified to be used in it? It seems like an R80 860lm might work fine.
b. Or do we need the 3 in 1 light, plus two down lights, as I have in our current ensuite?
3. We don’t want to go overboard with lighting for cost reasons and BCA requirements on total W/m2, but would like to have a functional product that looks good.
How would you design the lighting?
The architect’s preliminary drawings are below (Two Townhouses. - 2700mm ceiling, except where hatched – 2400mm). – Maybe you have some comments on the other rooms' lighting too. I’m having trouble deciding on the outside lights are the rear for the patio areas. Planning up/down (something like havit.com.au), but not sure about the rear of the two townhouses. Rather than spotlight, a wall mounted oyster style is being considered to provide general illumination. Maybe the Domus (https://www.domuslighting.com.au/block-mini-6w-led-240v-w-b-slr-3k-19570) referred to in a prior post (Mar 28, 2017) is adequate even though it just lights the wall.
