Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Balmoral in Sydney 164Aug 27, 2015 2:16 pm Thanks Steve. I'll do well to remember that. I'll be meeting Mark on Monday after his walk through at North Rocks to do a pre-walk through assessment of electrical fit out and Tile Direct's job in particular. I'm trying to be calm about all this as I think SS isnt that type of person who responds well to adversarial behaviour. That's why I talk to him not my husband. Worse comes to worst, he'll have to stop me from crying my eyes out if i get too frustrated - don't know exactly how he'll take that one, LOL Re: Balmoral in Sydney 165Aug 27, 2015 4:04 pm Small wins! -installed downlights for porch, study and media area as promised by SS -fixed uneven wall tiles in bath -fixed windows inside bath Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Balmoral in Sydney 166Aug 27, 2015 5:49 pm SteveMc I'm pretty sure rawson use the cheap hills home hub. Someone in the lifestyle subforum posted a thread. viewtopic.php?t=75972 Steve, no enclosure is provided for the NBN provision, only 1 x Data point, 1 x phone point & 1 x power point on the rear internal wall of the garage. Re: Balmoral in Sydney 167Aug 27, 2015 6:01 pm CalvinHobbes Steve, no enclosure is provided for the NBN provision, only 1 x Data point, 1 x phone point & 1 x power point on the rear internal wall of the garage Hmm. I'd probably be happier grabbing my own rack anyway. I'll be interested how they do mine as i have 6 Data points on my pan cabled to the garage. I'll make sure they don't put wall plates on them all. It'll look horrible if they do that. Did you end up putting any data points elsewhere for a wireless access point or study computer? Balmoral in Sydney 168Aug 27, 2015 6:29 pm I never really thought of putting the access points as high as you did. I'm planning to put my cable modem in the first floor study which is central to the first floor and then another one in the family area on the ground level. If need be, i can put one in the media to cover the front part of the ground floor. Any recommendation for a 24 port gigabit auto switch? How about access point? Re: Balmoral in Sydney 169Aug 27, 2015 10:24 pm fizzed Katran could you remind me what the upgrade cost is for floor to ceiling tiling in the bathrooms is please We didn't select it but now I think We might Thanks! Hi Fizzed, a question I can answer! The display home upgrade was 8k for the 4 bathrooms. We have taken out the 2nd ensure so 6k for the 3 bathrooms. Re: Balmoral in Sydney 170Aug 27, 2015 10:31 pm Firstly, Where do all the data cables run? I'm assuming the ff study. If you need to hook up the tv's, study, and other outlets it would only need a 8 or 12 port gig switch. To be honest, in a home network anything around the 100 dollar mark is good enough. Belkin, dlink, netgear, are all fine. For wireless systems, choose ones that feature 802.11ac as they are very good for data speeds. I'd recommend the netgear ex6200 / ac1200 model. Good value, good performer. Ones that are stuck to the wall socket aren't much good. You only need an extender so don't pay extra for router, adsl, switch ports, firewall, etc. If your adventurous check out dd-wrt which is an 'after market ' firmware that provides some extra features... But be careful. To Make sure pc's and tablets & phones can roam, just setup the same wireless ssid (name) using the same security settings and password on both the main router and wireless repeater gear. Whatever you do, DONT use the default repeater wizard as it uses mesh radio to connect the repeater to the router's wireless. You will use the Ethernet cable so just setup the ssid, security, and enable the same dhcp settings as the main router. Re: Balmoral in Sydney 171Aug 27, 2015 10:46 pm Steve, I have the option to put my modem in the understairs or FF study, while the autoswitch is located understairs as all data cables terminate there. I have a cat6 cable running from FF Study to understairs that will connect the modem to the autoswitch, if that makes sense. Re: Balmoral in Sydney 173Aug 28, 2015 9:40 pm I'd put the modem up in the ff study, use a switch in the under stair area, and somehow use the extender downstairs in the lounge / tv data points. You will get decent speed from the wireless in that area, so you should be able to steal that Network link Re: Balmoral in Sydney 174Aug 30, 2015 2:00 pm Thanks Steve, that's what I have in mind. I have to buy an autoswitch and a wireless access point for the ground floor. Re: Balmoral in Sydney 175Aug 31, 2015 3:12 pm Just a quick update on what's happening this week... Alfresco brick edging being rectified as of today Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Porch step will be rectified along with finishing the tiling understairs and garage steps. Also, the correct sidelight was delivered this morning and will finally get installed! Yey!!! I also had a 2 hour inspection of the electrical fit off which had a lot of defects which i will be emailing SS tonight to get the electrician to come back and fix all the items i've raised hopefully end of this week or early next. In addition, I also pointed out to SS that the feature stairbox is not square - NOT SQUARE. This became evident when the feature colour was painted on the stairbox. I showed him and conceded that the edge is not square. He'll get it sorted. SS broke bad news though that all balcony rails and metal cappings will be refitted with new ones as they've been scratched in the process. He is confident that it will not cause any more delay to our tentative hand over. Stuff that's due to happen this week: - first floor floorboards installation - driveway - shower screens installation - rectification of electrical fit off issues Hopefully next week he'll have the following booked: - cleaning of windows and sliding doors (any scratched windows/ doors will be replaced - feature wall painting finish and touch ups - staining of cedar panel and timber doors - appliance fit off - door handles - brick cleaning - site clean up - staining of timber stairs (last thing to do before walk through) SS advised that by early next week he can get us a firm date for the walk through. Keeping positive thoughts and praying that everything falls in its place to get us through that walk through and then hand over. Re: Balmoral in Sydney 176Sep 02, 2015 6:36 pm A bit disappointed yesterday as nothing's been done. Passed by the house today and looks like all windows and sliding doors been cleaned, more like washed. All tiles in the ground floor and wet areas have been cleaned as well. It's finally coming together. The finish line is so close now! so jealous! Did you talk to mark about cleaning up the exterior bricks on those sections where the salt bloomed? I'd also hit him up to infill the bricks where the pressure cleaner has blown out the mortar. I have to say i have had some awesome advice from a close friend who has gone through the mill building a metricon house. It's been an eye opener for me as i think both metricon and rawson are similar in their house designs and quality. In preparation for the walk through, grab yourself some post it notes or masking tape and a pen (put numbers on them and make your own notes). put them on your defects so the painters and other trades can easily identify the issues. This way there are no questions asked and no second round fix ups. Take your time, don't let him rush you. Ideally, both you and your husband go through the same rooms as you often overlook things on the first pass. Go through each room checking the windows, locks, doors, taps, fans etc. Look at your sliding doors carefully as they often paint them while hanging and miss the tops thinking you won't see it. Unsanded putty on the frames and skirtings are often ignored (lazy painters). Kitchen is tricky, without appliances and equipment you can't really do anything until after handover. Drawers and cupboards should be perfect. No scratches, dings or ******* chips where the handles have been fixed. Listen to the hinges as they don't test them in the factory. Check the edges of the internal shelves and carcass. The same goes for the vanities and laundry fitout. Externally, check the brick work for cracked bricks and unfilled AJs. Make a list of your own and also check over your paperwork with the variations and the inclusion contract list. Remember, this is the last thing they need for the final invoice so it's a good chance any defects identified will be fixed quicker than after handover. There will be issues later on as well, but at this stage you have Mark's attention Balmoral in Sydney 178Sep 02, 2015 9:07 pm Thanks Steve! I have told Mark my next problem will be brick cleaning as I am expecting all the patchy white to be completely cleaned and mortar issues to be fixed as i told him i find the finish not to my liking. It just ruins the whole look of the house. On another note any comment on the gadgets I am planning to procure for my home network below:

Re: Balmoral in Sydney 179Sep 02, 2015 9:54 pm Looks good. I have a my Cloud 2tb as my time capsule replacement. It's no powerhouse but good value and decent for most things. I'd probably go for a ADSL 1200ac router as well if your likely to be using adsl2 rather than the included crap Telstra and optus provide. Always something you can upgrade later i guess. Re: Balmoral in Sydney 180Sep 02, 2015 10:26 pm How has your experience in a snapshot been with Rawson for the Balmoral? We are considering the Balmoral 32KII and wanted to get feedback on Rawson.
