Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 22, 2014 12:29 am Hi all, Has anyone got any diagrams showing the best way to build a front fence with piers, specifically how to do the pier reinforcing - I am going to use 2 course bricks I have recovered from the waste piles all over and then render it over. Thanks ! Our build thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64997&start=40 Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 2Jul 22, 2014 7:38 pm http://www.wanneroo.wa.gov.au/files/9e2 ... Hurry up and wait Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 3Aug 16, 2014 3:06 pm Got our building permit through from Rockingham so good to go. Piers at 1.8m and infill to 800mm- that was the plan but now think we'll drop it to 1.5m Our build thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64997&start=40 Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 5Aug 16, 2014 8:47 pm ^ that's a bit uncalled for. You don't have to be a brick layer to build a brick fence. That will go down well seeing you're not a bricklayer. Do you have any tools? Do you know how to mix mud etc? Geez it's only a brick fence... if you can't learn on a simple brick fence what can you learn on? My build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=68002 Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 9Aug 18, 2014 11:08 am Yeah its not like it is an attempt at open heart surgery. No disrespect to brickies but it cannot be that hard to lay the bricks for a wall if you take your time and are patient. Ok it may not be as fast or as good as a seasoned brickie but worth a try. My father is not what I would call trades inclined and he built a small brick wall around one side of my parents pool. No experience, no internet, never tried before. He got some tips from friends and the wall is still standing today 40 years on. I wouldn't do it myself as I don't have the time but there are plenty of videos on the interweb that explain what to do. I think the footings are what is important and needed to be constructed properly. The other angle is that getting a brickie to do a small job like that may prove difficult as they may not want to quote. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 10Aug 18, 2014 1:10 pm I'm intending to do my front brick fence on my own too. But will leave the render to the professionals I think. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 13Aug 22, 2014 9:19 pm Like I said, no offence to any brickies but maybe it maybe help to give some tips to follow. People willing to try this are not looking to eat into the professional brick layers pie. I have seen pretty decent examples in many areas where the "non trade qualified" person does as good if not better. Brickies out there, what are the most critical things to consider when bricklaying. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 14Aug 23, 2014 11:26 am Get your mud mix right. I did a course and still managed to have mine a bit hard though within acceptable tolerance. the piers are still standing 25 years on and are the base of a huge patio as well as an extended section which was for a fenced area. Our neighbour at the time was a brilliant brickie and I ended up getting him to check them over. I also got him to do several others as i wasn't confident to do the 2 additional ones for a 2nd patio base as they were freestanding ones( the 2 patios were to be connected up) You'll only be doing a small mix at a time( hand mix) it's tiring but at least you wont have loads of waste if you do it a bit at a time. Mix in a barrow or on a sheet of flat tin. Watch your brick levels. Get a good trowel, have a spirit level and use a string line if you want the piers/wall ends to match up. You can make a simple piers height gauge with a length of timber notched at each layer starting point. Brickies use a metal version. I bought proper rod for the centre of mine. Make sure you tie the wall into the piers so it is all one thing. Use steel rod in your piers and depending on wall height it should be double brick. I'm assuming it will not be a retaking wall as well at all. Otherwise, you need to do much more than this. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 16Aug 26, 2014 8:37 pm sorry we don't live there any more so I cant give you current pics. But here are some old ones. Our brickie neighbour did the 2 piers with hanging baskets on. I did the others. He also did the brick retaining wall that all the others are on. I did one big mistake which hubby didn't pick up and I only noticed years later. The final half pier ( 2nd pic) I didn't check the level and it was nearly 2 cms below the other one at the top. The carpenter never said a thing when we had the lattice inserts made.. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 17Aug 26, 2014 8:45 pm My DH did a bricklaying course at tafe when we built our first house 18 years ago the limestone walls are still standing .....but then my DH will use any excuse to do course <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=62083">viewtopic.php?t=62083</a><!-- l --> Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 18Aug 28, 2014 10:19 pm kexkez, I'm not sure when you built these but you have probably violated the law. Single brick piers were deemed illegal as they aren't strong enough to provide any support and are quite dangerous (prone to falling). Besides that, single brick piers look ridiculous. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 19Aug 28, 2014 10:36 pm Not in Perth Nemisis, and yes we are talking many years ago. This was the standard back then. My brickie neighbour actually now works as a building inspector having become a fully fledged builder a number of years back and for a time after this having worked for the WA Building Commission as one of their inspectors. He was one of the inspectors who investigated a serious mishap on our local holiday isle a few years back with relation to piers that didn't conform despite being build by so called professionals. My piers all had tied steel rods within them as per regulations. Old Home Restoration / Renovation Try your local council.
