Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 341Mar 21, 2014 6:31 pm Hi Doozer, we paid extra for the coastal protection so the wall ties are polymer and the lintels were all heavily galvanised. Pretty sure they're fine although you reminded me to check something. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 342Mar 21, 2014 6:57 pm Yea cool then with the brick ties, with the lintels there probably hot dipped galvanised to 600g per m2 which is the standard for most lintels, according to the Australian Standards anything under 1km to the ocean has to be an R4 coating (galvanised lintels are R3 and can't go any higher that I know of) the only way to achieve an R4 rating is by 2 pack epoxy on top of an R3 lintel. I'm not trying to be smart, just trying to help as I know the majority of builders don't do it right. Like I said I maybe wrong but did a fair bit of research into it. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 343Mar 21, 2014 9:37 pm Hi Doozer, I don't know how you can tell that they're only galvanised and not coated too. You must have better eyes than me, I've looked at the original pictures and I can't tell. I know the I beams have epoxy on them because they're still visible and it's peeling off. I'll give them a call and get them to send through the manufacturers C-of-C. Edit to add: It doesn't need to be R4. To comply with the BCA it only needs to be galvanised to 600g/sqm without the epoxy coating. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 344Mar 22, 2014 1:23 am I'll post the Australian Standard tomorrow regarding the R3 & R4 ratings to lintels, I'm sure the BCA states that it has to have additional protection but I'll suss that at TAFE on Tuesday evening and also the BCA refers back to the Australian Standards quiet often. I was suggesting that the lintels weren't coated because of the colour, duplex coating is normally a dull colour to me the lintels still have the galvanised shiny appearance to them. But you said above that they have been 2 packed so all will be good. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 345Mar 22, 2014 10:19 am AS3700 in regards to R3 & R4 Ratings
Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 346Mar 22, 2014 12:18 pm Well spotted Doozer. I am always surprised how many brickies and builders in our area don't know this especially regarding brick ties. You don't have a higher resolution of that AS3700 do you ? I can barely make out the letters and it would be very handy to have in my files. Stewie Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 347Mar 22, 2014 12:58 pm PM me your email address and I'll send it there Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 348Mar 22, 2014 2:54 pm Doozer1905 I was suggesting that the lintels weren't coated because of the colour, duplex coating is normally a dull colour to me the lintels still have the galvanised shiny appearance to them. But you said above that they have been 2 packed so all will be good. The 'I' beams under the balcony are epoxied, they're still open. I'm guessing you're looking at the lintels above the al fresco, I've not looked at them. I'll have a look through our photos. Editted to add: And you're correct. BCA states "3.3.3.0 Performance Requirement P2.1 is satisfied for masonry accessories if they are constructed and installed in accordance with AS 3700 - Masonry Code." Ps Doozer, I'd remove the Australian Standard, they do enforce their copyright. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 349Mar 22, 2014 3:36 pm Thanks for the heads up on the AS Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 350Mar 22, 2014 3:47 pm Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 351Mar 23, 2014 12:33 pm Yea mate, to me they are too shiny to have a duplex coating, but I could be wrong. Great having forums like this though keeps them on there toes. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- ???? - Flooring update 352Mar 24, 2014 8:23 pm Doozer1905 Yea mate, to me they are too shiny to have a duplex coating, but I could be wrong. We've been and had a look and really can't tell. A couple of the lintels above the windows look to be quite dull but not painted. It could be that the Zinc (galvanisation) has passivated over the last few months but, conversely, they may not have been shiny to start with ie painted dull. The ones on the al fresco (the bits we can still see, at least) look shiny but not galvanised at all so maybe they are coated (with a silver coloured 2-pack). Fortunately one of the guys that works for me is a NACE Level 2 tech so he'll have a look when the equipment comes back from Brisbane. The equipment can differentiate between, and measure the thckness of, magnetic, non-magnetic and non-conductive coatings & materials. Anyway, we've finally managed to do an actual update. Nothing done today but at least they made a start last week. Glad its all moving along again and coming together for you Depends how much direct sun it gets. Is there any shading (eaves or trees)? If the sun hits a window directly it doesn't matter too much if it's double or single… 1 12834 9 25136 Congratulations! Nice to put that to bed before christmas, now you can relax 3 7371 |
