The chippies were still on-site so we did a drive-by and came back later. We saw you driving onto Spyglass. Next time your up there just look at the view not the construction and you will be all smiles. I just noticed something in my house though, the internal renderer has gone over our the lightswitch and gpo holes? wonder if that is normal. Hope your build goes well Builder - Aveling Homes Type - Luxury collection 4x3 Design - Chicago My build viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64958&p=1024362#p1024362 Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Kissed and Made up 267Dec 06, 2013 11:02 pm That's exactly what we intend to do. Our rellies in the UK would kill for that view so we'll concentrate on our efforts enjoying it. Don't think the render is a biggie. A few people have said it's happened to theirs. The sparky knocks the render out. Just make sure they don't miss any. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Kissed and Made up 268Dec 07, 2013 12:13 am SslayerR to the other guy. Fast and good is rare, slow and cheap is not good What do you base your statement on? The triangle is just a guide - and there is no exact figure to say "spend $100k more and that guarantees quality". It is more a reminder focus on what area that is most important to you: cost, quality, time. In a magical world of rainbows and unicorns, we would have really cheap houses that are super high quality that are built overnight. In reality, it is a balance and even further to that, there is no objective baseline to say what defines "fast", "cheap" or "good". Usually it is "my neighbours build is going faster so mine is too slow", or "I got trade prices for an upgrade that was cheaper than the builder so they are too expensive". The number of posts I've seen on here about people raging over their build taking longer than their neighbours is astounding - particularly when I'm sure their own build is finished within the contracted time-frames. The build process is emotional enough as it is - so my suggestion would be that we funnel that emotion into excitement and enjoy the ride rather than stress over issues along the way. As seen here, even issues that may seem big at the time they occur can usually be resolved by working with the builder. Anyway - sorry owf to hijack your thread for my soapbox! Nice to see the progress - interesting to see the different styles of build. We had many Colourbond moments over several weeks after the pod was delivered as the roof took a while to finally piece together. Still missing the finishing touches from the balcony but hopefully before Xmas we will be properly locked up Demo + Build in Rivervale, Western Australia Moved in June 2014 http://rivervale.tumblr.com/ Building Thread Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Kissed and Made up 269Dec 07, 2013 2:27 pm zaxon Anyway - sorry owf to hijack your thread for my soapbox! No worries. Building is emotional and easy sometimes to concentrate on the negatives. When we look at what we've got and what we'll hopefully end up with the rollercoaster ride should be worth it. zaxon Nice to see the progress - interesting to see the different styles of build. We had many Colourbond moments over several weeks after the pod was delivered as the roof took a while to finally piece together. Still missing the finishing touches from the balcony but hopefully before Xmas we will be properly locked up We were attracted to the 2nd storey approach from both BT and 101. Slightly different ways of achieving the same thing. We were lucky to find a design that was so close to what we wanted and still be able to modify it how we wanted. Can't wait for the scaffold to come down because I don't think you can quite appreciate the balcony. The way it sticks out from the back of the house is going to be amazing, I still want to go frameless glass for an infinity effect but I think the voice of reason is going to make us stay with balustrading. The phrase "If you're going to clean it, you can have it!" has been wielded a few times. Zaxon, yours is looking great now. Can't wait to see your balcony. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Kissed and Made up 270Dec 08, 2013 12:58 am zaxon SslayerR to the other guy. Fast and good is rare, slow and cheap is not good What do you base your statement on? ". Reality. Not sure where you shop but cheap is not usually good, occasionally you can get a bargain I will admit but usually a cheaper product is of lesser quality. The reason I earn what I do, is because I am worth x amount, if you want someone better it will cost x more if you just want the cheapest option you will save x amount. zaxon particularly when I'm sure their own build is finished within the contracted time-frames. LOL. Of course it is, the contract is a sham which allows them to extend for reasons ranging from the weather to the tradie had a crash on the way to site. If you actually read your contract there is virtually every excuse written into it to allow the builder to extend and still be within contract time. zaxon so my suggestion would be that we funnel that emotion into excitement and enjoy the ride rather than stress over issues along the way. As seen here, even issues that may seem big at the time they occur can usually be resolved by working with the builder. Only because the client managed to find the mistake, the problem with enjoying the ride and not watching them is the stuff they manage to hide from you. I, like you all have paid good money (regardless of cost really as it is a huge amount for anyone) and I expect a job to be done to a good standard not a cheap one. My "stress" over the course of building is well justified as I am minimizing the risk of the old "wish I saw that before the maintenance period was over" story. So really I completely disagree with you and think all people building should expect the best (especially as each builder harps on how good they are at sales) and be vigilant, I will spend the next 50 years enjoying and being happy with the house, for the 6 months of building I will be on their back to get it done right, not cheap, not good, not fast just plain old right. Either way I am happy to continue this on my thread so we don't steal owf but I respect your opinion and acknowledge the majority of what you have said, but unfortunately I just disagree with it Hope your build goes well Builder - Aveling Homes Type - Luxury collection 4x3 Design - Chicago My build viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64958&p=1024362#p1024362 Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Kissed and Made up 271Dec 08, 2013 1:01 am OWF they were working at your block and mine today, someone must have given out free beer in spyglass Hope your build goes well Builder - Aveling Homes Type - Luxury collection 4x3 Design - Chicago My build viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64958&p=1024362#p1024362 Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Upper Storey Cladding & Gut 272Dec 16, 2013 10:11 pm The upper storey is now starting to look like a building rather than a frame. The eaves, fascias and gutters are finished now. The tradesmen have been there today attaching the EPS structural panels to the framework. Next step is render and colorbond. It's exciting seeing "our" part of the house take shape. Glad to hear everything progressing well after your dramas. My Thread (Halls Head Beach House): viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67006 Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Upper Storey Cladding & Gut 274Dec 18, 2013 12:31 am Thanks. The rendered EPS cladding was one of the things that attracted us to BT. It's really underused here. In Europe it's becoming very popular. Can't wait to see the render go on. I think they were hoping to get it on before xmas but I'm not sure there's enough time. How's yours progressing? Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Upper Storey Cladding & Gut 275Dec 18, 2013 10:52 am We are about a week behind you... Still! Polystyrene all delivered and timber frames up. No eaves or gutters yet though. At least the kids now know where their rooms are and the exterior has taken shape. The EPS system I didn't know a lot about, but I'm glad their are some builders trying different things in Perth. Our lots are getting smaller (and rightfully so) but to build single storey houses with no opportunities for greenery will make for very hot spaces so having opportunities for more of the market to build two storey is great. Still can't believe we're doing it. It looks far more substantial with the cladding in place. It's almost finished now and they've put up safety rails around the roof so guessing the colorbond can't be too far away. Re: Ben Trager - Secret Harbour- Upper Storey Cladding & Gut 278Dec 19, 2013 12:34 am There is something good about watching it things gradually being built - although seeing them crane it on at ours was certainly an interesting day Feeling better about how the top floor is coming together now? Also, could I ask a favour? Whenever I come to your thread I keep hunting around to find your plans to get a picture of it and end up scrolling through posts. Do you think you could edit your first post with a quick link so lazy people like me can find it easier?
