Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 21, 2014 11:47 am We are close to having our plans "officially" drawn. In our current house our WIR and ensuite are at opposite ends of our bedroom - has never been a problem. On the new plan the ensuite is via the walk in robe - just how it worked out and we thought it would be practical. Now I am wondering what people's preference is and why. I am leaning towards separating them. Whilst I love those dreamy neat dressing room/ WIRs that are always neat with a beautiful ottoman/ chair in the middle that is not our personal reality (we are generally a bit messy and if there was a chair it would not be visible for all the clothes chucked on it) and I wonder if walking through the not always neat WIR to use the bathroom will become irritating. So I have adjusted the plan to separate them so can close my walk in robe door...... Please share your ideas - would it be a issue either way if you were purchasing a house? If anyone suggests I just be neater - that is an option..... Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 2Aug 21, 2014 12:03 pm If it was me I'd go for the one that makes best use of the space. Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 4Aug 21, 2014 12:25 pm I'm inclined to agree with 2cupcakes. I would also hate the idea of looking at and being reminded of my bad. Organisation skills every time I had to go through it. If you can afford to have it fitted out professionally then it's all hidden behind wardribe doors and not such an issue. My Build, viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64837 Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 5Aug 21, 2014 12:25 pm I think it's a personal preference. I prefer them separate, for mould issues. Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 6Aug 21, 2014 12:56 pm We will get to our WIR by walking through the ensuite. We only get dressed twice a day most times, yet go to the toilet many more times than that. I am not concerned about the mould, we will have an exhaust fan as well as 2 large windows that can be opened. Samdra Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 7Aug 21, 2014 1:05 pm Ours is like Sandra77s. Access WIR via ensuite. Ensuite has a seperate toilet plus a fan and window. There is also a sliding door to the WIR so hopefully altogether it will avoid too much steam getting in there. We were going to have the access from the bedroom but didn't really like the look of so many doors. Also having a door to the WIR avoids having to see the mess or having to fit it out the WIR with built in robe doors. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 8Aug 21, 2014 1:09 pm Walking through WIR to ensuite is what we have done. I copied a layout I've had before as you just get out of the shower then get dressed a few steps away. You shouldn't have mould with a window and exhausts. You can also put sachets of something in the closet to absorb moisture if that is an issue. I agree with StephyD in that whatever gives you the best use of the space. I wouldn't want my bedroom to be smaller just to have them separate. Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 9Aug 21, 2014 1:12 pm Thanks for all the responses!! I think moisture is always a possible issue even with great extraction. Still playing with design Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 10Aug 21, 2014 1:51 pm I'd always have a separate entrance. Moisture is a main reason - but there are others. By that I mean a separate area - with the door away from the ensuite- ie not part of. Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 11Aug 21, 2014 4:33 pm We walk through the robe to get to bathroom and it's fine for us. I keep the exhaust fan going till I see the moisture has gone from wir window. I like that I step out the shower and dry and walk two steps to put my clothes on and then back to bathroom. Sometimes if its cold I will quickly grab my clothes and get dressed in the bathroom where we have a heat light. We have a door from bedroom to wir which we can close so no mess is seen, it's a cavity slider. Oh and we have a separate door to the toilet. The toilet can never be too far away from the bedroom in my opinion so having it after the wir gives us just that little more. Good luck with your decision, I would have been happy with either option mostly just grateful to have two toilets, ha ha. Cant wait to see final plans Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 13Aug 21, 2014 5:11 pm We have always had separate but im thinking it gives more wall space if they r together coz there r less doors!! Our first home: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72839 Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 14Aug 21, 2014 6:43 pm The enterence to the bathroom is via the wir however the Ensuite has a solid core door so steam should not be an issue. Also big exhaust fans too. Originally has a slider but as we had the space we thought a door would be nicer. Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 15Aug 31, 2014 12:08 pm I don't like the idea of walking through the WIR to get to the Ensuite. Even if you put doors on the closet so it's like your walking past doors, you don't want to have to dodge your partner if they are in the wardrobe to go to the Ensuite. Just my preference Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 16Aug 31, 2014 3:49 pm We like the idea of our ensuite being at the other end of a WIR; someone can go to the toilet in the middle of the night without all those exciting noises being enjoyed in the bedroom. Re: Ensuite via WIR or separate entrance? 17Aug 31, 2014 7:10 pm You should run fan 10'20'minutes after shower, and if the correct fan size has been put in,not a problem,I would think separating ensuite and wir to opposite ends of bedroom would be a negative you could avoid.
