Which lights do people put at the back/side of the house (i.e next to the laundry exit etc)?
Flood lights or regular lights that usually go at the front of the house?
Is flood light going to be overkill in this situation?

Is it only a small space?
I would think that a floodlight is overkill unless you are always out there at night. I'd just go with regular lights like out the front.

Well, it's the side of the house... Thought about doing dual light (one goes one way, the other one the other way), so can see both ways.
The question is how powerful is the floodlight compare to the regular one?

Generally more powerful. Having two back-to-back would definately give you a lot of focussed light and you won't be complaining it's too dark..
If it were me I'd start one 'normal' light and see how that goes because that would be quick and cheaper than putting in 2 floods straight away. If you do decide you want more light then you can go with 2.
