Post subject:  How to convert Linear metre into metre square?

Hi everyone,

I've been looking at prices of solid timber and have been quoted for prices of linear metre rather than square metre. Does anyone know how to convert linear metre into square metre? Or can someone tell me how many linear metre is 80 square metres?

It's so confusing!!
Many thank. :D

To convert from lineal metres to square metres, multiply by the width.

Thanks Casa for your advice! :D

But excuse my ignorance  , but what do i multiply with the width? I am wanting to get a price for an 80 square metre area.

many thanks.

You need to know the width of you floor board

If you multiply the length of the board by the width of the board you get the area of the board...ie 1 linear metre of a 10cm wide floor board will be 0.1 square metres.

Or if you need to know how many linear metres you need for 80 sq metres divide 80 by the width of the floor board in metres.

Hope that makes sense.

= 80 / (length of material * width of material)

example

to cover 80meters squared with 1.8 meters long by 15 centimeters wide planks

80 / (1.8 * .15 ) => 80 / .27 = 296.30 units would be required

Thanks for the link, but it doesnt show you how to convert square metres into Linear.

Thanks 'chelle and mikkyg! I kind of understand it. But I thought timber comes in random lengths, how would i find out the length of the material. I know the width of the timber is 80mm.

thanks.

You can buy it in a varierty of lengths, so best to check with your local bunnings or where ever your are getting it from to see what they stock it in.

Give us the length (or area of interest) and the width of the material. We'll take it from there.

For example if you had carpet with a width of 3.6 m then:
1) A 2 metre length would cover 7.2 square metres (that is, multiply by width), or
2) 10 square meters would require 2.778 metre length of carpet (that is, divide by width)

I know the width of the timber is 80mm.

So for 80sq metres with a 80mm width board...

80sq m/0.08m = 1000 linear metres.....does that sound about right??

Yup, I just editted my post as there was a typo in there, my calc went one step too far and shows units. But you are right on the money.

80mm boards - 12.5 L/M per sq. metre

130mm boards - 7.69 L/M per sq. metre

Thank you to everyone who has helped!! :D
I'm not very mathematical so all those calculations were confusing me.
Thanks to Luke, that's exactly what I wanted.
All the calculations all were good, it all got to the same point. But Luke's one was easier to process!!

Thanks again!! :D

Post subject:  Re: How to convert Linear metre into metre square?

It's simple. If you have 80 sq. meters, just divide it with the width of the board. Eg if your floorboards are 19cm = 0.19m wide, you will need 80/0.19 = 421 linear meters. They suggest to add at least 10% for cutoffs, so you will need 421 + 42.1 = around 463 linear meters.
