Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 11, 2020 10:34 am Guys, lend me some wisdom. We just did our walkthrough and the stairs look nothing like I imagined. We chose laminate for our flooring so our builder said the look I’m after is only achievable with hardwood timber. The two bottom steps I was hoping to wrap around without the side board. (I’m not sure what that thing is called). Is there a way to achieve this with laminate flooring?? The flooring guy was there today and he reckon it’s not possible. The product we chose has nosing with a similar look to the laminate and not a metal strip, if that helps. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Help! My stairs look tacky 2Mar 11, 2020 11:39 am Your stairs are constructed differently. You have timber stairs. Most likely made of MDF. That piece on the side is called a stringer. The other picture is most likely concrete stairs (we had exactly the same in our last house) and they don't have stringers. The steps are formed up to wrap around like that. Having said that your bottom steps could have been built the same but those 2 bottom steps would have had to wrap around rather than stop at the stringer. There is nothing that can be done now without incurring big costs to rebuild the steps. The two bottom steps I was hoping to wrap around without the side board. (I’m not sure what that thing is called). The "side board" is a stringer. It's an external one, but they can be internal. Did you show the builder that lower picture before they built the stairs? Not sure why they couldn’t have achieved that look for you if that is what you wanted. Ruthnpal The flooring guy was there today and he reckon it’s not possible. Laminate flooring is just a "picture" of timber on a base, usually MDF. It is certainly structurally meant to work only one way, so might be difficult to clad the stairs. However, I can’t see why it can’t be done, as long as you understand the limitations of the end result. That said, it will take some carpentry skills and all up it will probably be more expensive than solid timber would have been in the first place. Ruthnpal The product we chose has nosing with a similar look to the laminate and not a metal strip, if that helps. I don’t know what you mean by this statement, and I see no metal in either picture.
