Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 23, 2008 11:07 am Hi All,
Can anyone tell me which laminate thickness is healthier? 1) 12 mm. I found it on ebay. Looks nice, strong and reliable. Very hard to scratch. Excellent optics, high definition picture. 10 or 12 patterns. Edges are beveled. Edges are waxed and hence are more water resistant. Made in China. No brand. There is no E1 sign (European Formaldehyde emission standard) on the box however on ebay ad there is this sign. To test the water resistance of the laminate I put some water on 2 planks which were clicked together. After for 24 hours the edges were not affected by water. 2) 8mm. Look very nice. Good colour, patterns. My wife likes the colour very much and so do I. However the it's easy to scratch, my key leaves white scratches. I also tested it on water resistance for 24 hours. The planks were not affected by water. The laminate is made in Korea. Even though the sales person told me that it was a very good brand, I could not find any info about this brand on the internet. My concern is formaldehyde emissions from these types of laminate. I think even if 12 mm is thicker and stronger, it has got more glue and hence emits more VOC/formaldehyde. What do you think? Thanks. Re: Which laminate thickness is healthier? 12mm vs 8mm? 3Jun 23, 2008 11:25 am Antoxa what application are you thinking of using it for? Benchtops, furniture, other??? Good Luck. Re: Which laminate thickness is healthier? 12mm vs 8mm? 7Jun 23, 2008 12:03 pm I would have thought it would gas out in a certain period of time, until it was negligible. And it's not like you're going to shut the door for prolonged periods and keep children in the room.......or are you? Re: Which laminate thickness is healthier? 12mm vs 8mm? 8Jun 23, 2008 7:51 pm The main concern with formaldahyde in MDF/HDF is inhalation of dust when cutting it. Once a floor is down there isn't really a concern as far as leaching goes. Re: Which laminate thickness is healthier? 12mm vs 8mm? 10Jun 23, 2008 11:27 pm Insofar as scratching is concerned, how many times are you going to be "keying" your own floor?
If you have a dog - well, you wouldn't allow it indoors anyway, would you? Dogs being outside creatures....and maybe you don't have one anyhow. There aren't too many things that can really scratch even an 8mm laminate flooring, especially if you, your family and your guests take your shoes off at the door. Unless there are stilettoes being used as ice-skates in the house, that is.... The formaldahyde issue is rather a moot point. The emissions from flooring are rather negligable, really (especially compared with hardwood) and, as others have said, you're not gonna lick the floor are you? (We hope not!)
