Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 22, 2012 1:36 pm We are in need of some advice regarding which direction to lay our floorboards. A couple of weeks ago we selected our flooring and picked out some tiles for the kitchen/dining area and timber flooring (Merbau) for the living areas. The thing we had not considered when planning the house was the direction we wanted the floorboards laid. It had actually not occurred to us at all that this needed consideration. But because our house is build around the corner and therefore has angles in it, that creates some issues. We do not want to change direction of the floorboards from one area to another so we have to pick a direction and keep it up throughout the house. We thought we had it worked out, but lately have had second thoughts. I've drawn up the two options we are tossing up between to get a better visual impression: Option 1: run the floorboards with the angle of the entry: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Option 2: run the floorboards perpendicular to the angle of the entry: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ At this stage we are a bit undecided which one would look better. Does anyone here have any ideas or tips on what the best direction is for laying floorboards? I like the first direction.....wide across the entry to give the "Illusion" of extra width......but hey, what do I know as our flooring guy suggested the opposite to what I had in mind originally (May have meant more work for him I suspect ) Owner Building on 1800sqm Sanity Intact so far Locked up March 2012 Re: Laying Floorboards - which Direction??? 4Jun 22, 2012 3:02 pm I've already posted my opinion on your build thread, but hey, when have I been known to hold back from posting? Option 2 so that the eye is lead to the windows as you enter the rooms. Option 2 so that the eye is lead to the windows as you enter the rooms. I think option one is better because of the entrance/hall way, the rooms will be filled with furniture to distract the eye, but in the entrance with no furniture you want to be lead along the hall way. Re: Laying Floorboards - which Direction??? 6Jun 22, 2012 5:26 pm The general rule of thumb is the hallway needs to run length ways, but in your case the general rule of thumb is thrown out the door ! Option 1 tends to lean towards this theory more than option 2 though. Just to contradict this though, the 2nd rule is to try to run the boards the longest direction in your main living areas.... Option 1 by a nose. You will have a fair degree of wastage on this floor either way. The flooring people we are buying from suggested Option 1 as well. But I am leaning more and more towards option 2. That way the floorboards will run into most of the rooms and also towards the windows which I think will be better. Still not entirely sure though as the "professionals" seem to prefer option 1.
