Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 21, 2009 3:51 pm Hi, I have a 1930s Art-Deco apartment that suffers very badly from noise transmission from the apartment below. Ie I know what they are watching on TV from the sound that carries up into my apartment. Unfortunately it not possible to put insulation in their ceiling. I am getting a new carpet and was considering using Bridgestone Prime underlay to help mitigate some of the noise transmission. The salesperson at Carpet Court also suggested a product called "Pyrotek silent step" http://www.pyrotek.info/listings.php?id=1594 but said that it was relatively expensive. Has anyone had any experience with this product? Does it work well? She couldn't tell me how much it cost, so can any one tell me what it is likely to be per sqm? Is it worth the additional cost? Are there other acoustic underlays I should consider? Thanks, GDT Re: Acoustic underlay for carpet? Pyrotek silent step? 2Aug 21, 2009 11:45 pm Hi GDT, That's great info! I hadn't heard of that underlay (the Pyrotek Silentstep) so I have learned something new. It looks very similar to Prime, (which is one of the very best underlays) but with an extra layer of sound barrier material on top. Looking at it, I'd say it is absolutely the stuff to get for your apartment. Choose a nice quality dense pile wool carpet and your sound transmission problems should be a thing of the past! It probably won't be cheap, but it would be money well spent! Go for it! Ash. Re: Acoustic underlay for carpet? Pyrotek silent step? 5Oct 30, 2011 2:18 pm Dear Grant Did the Pyrotek silent step acoustic underlay do the trick for the 1930's Art Deco building you are/were in? I have exactly the same problem as you did. Many thanks Dekyi Re: Acoustic underlay for carpet? Pyrotek silent step? 6Nov 16, 2011 9:46 pm If it is what I think it is then it is Airstep Prime with a carpet tile type backing adhered to it. We have used it in a Private school classroom block for the 2nd floor above a school Library. It is very expensive, very heavy, short length rolls due to the weight, but worked awesome. Can't remember the cost but it was what I considered alot. Ours was made in Brisbane from memory but it was about 5years ago. Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 6296 Hi l plan to install a self adhesive vinyl plank floor. l first need to attach masonite boards underlay to by plywood subfloor of my house.
