Post subject:  Brown tiles with contrasting grout pics please..

I am hoping that people would not mind in posting pics of brownish coloured tiles for the floor and the grout they have chosen. I am a very plain person when it comes to colours etc... and the tiler suggested a greyish grout to have a contrast with the floor tiles as I wanted to match the grout to the tile :) He said you may as well just paint your concrete with my idea :D I am finding it difficult to visualise the contrasting colours, he did show me samples of his work but there were no real brownish tiles etc..

Thanks :D

Hi Tillie, no pics but I tend to agree with your tiler. I wouldn't match the grout to the tile for a large floor area.

With a dark brown tiles, I would go an off whiteish/very light brown to contrast a bit. I thought that was the norm, but I could be wrong

Hopefully someone has some pics for you :)

Well I would suggest to my clients to use a dark grout if using a dark brown floor. Firstly do you want your eye drawn to the floor or not? Do you wish to make the floor look seamless? If you use such a contrast in colours your eyes will see the grout not the tile. Also a lighter grout (even when sealed) will still darken and deteriate in time. As the grout will stand out so much, so will the variation in the colour of the grout, the heavy traffic areas will be far more noticeable then the perimiter. See when some one comes in and use say a light coloured floor we always suggest a neutral grey as it tends to deteriate the least. A light coloured tile with a light tile will look great at first but in time it will not be so. In your case you have dark tiles and the grout will stand out even more - and so will any patchyness in colour of the grout in time.

Thankyou very much for your informative reply Charlie, I am going to have a think about and also goolge tiling pics to try and make up my mind. I am considering a more seamless approach as you had described.

I'm sorry but I don't have pics either.... I did a bathroom with "mocha" coloured tiles which are like a cool medium brown. I picked a grout that looked exactly the same as the tiles and it turned out a few shades lighter when it dried and looked great. So I would go for the same colour just a couple/a few shades lighter.

As some others have suggested, I'd go with a grout similar to, but slightly lighter than the tiles. Possibly a beige or darker.

I have samples of popular grout colours from Ardex/Dunlop who make premium grouts. Here's one that would go well with the average brown tile.... Ardex FG8, colour 280 Havana

Also, suggest you keep grout joints to as narrow as your tiler can do with your tiles.

Ash.

Hi Tillie,

Our main bathroom, toilet & laundry are tiled in a chocolate brown and the grout matches nearly exactly (think it might've been called espresso?) . I love this look and it is SO easy to keep clean. Here are some pics. I have also included one of the ensuite where the tile is lighter; I matched the grout as close as I could and ended up with a light grey colour; it's not exact but blends in pretty well I think.

In this first photo; notice the tiles on the side of the bath. There was too much builder's dust in the grout in the floor ones to show the true colour, it's actually much darker.

Thanks royalblue and donuts for your replies they are greatly appreciated :D I think it shall be safer to match the grout or just a shade lighter as suggested as I really do not want it to stand out and be a feature if that makes sense??

Thanks again for posting pics Donuts :D

I also tried to get the grout colour as close as possible to the tile. You will find the grout lightens as it dries anyway.

I have matched the dark tiles with dark grout as I didn't want the tiles to stand out and instead wanted to provide a warmer feel and more seamless approach. My tiles are not the highlight of the ensuite so therefore didn't choose a light grout colour. Instead our in-situ shower is the highlight of the ensuite as well as the vanity top. Hope that helps. Also, if you have a good colour consultant they will help you through this.
