Is there any place for them anymore ? Re: Shutters anyone ? 2Apr 06, 2008 12:11 pm Cabinfever Given the huge cost of double-glazed windows, I was wondering whether anyone does shutters anymore ? They'd have to be monumentally cheaper, possibly good for security, although obviously will make rooms very dark. Is there any place for them anymore ? Lots of different options re: shutters. Most ppl seem to be using shutters as internal window dressings - last time I looked it was around 10-12K for the whole house. It would depend on what type of external application you are thinking of but if we are talking wooden shutters I would think double glazing would come in cheaper .... but thats just a guess. Roller shutters are another option but I'm not fond of the look myself. Re: Shutters anyone ? 3Apr 06, 2008 8:30 pm I've got a couple of windows on the street side of my place which I never open, always have the curtains drawn, but let in street noise and being single-glazed are not so good insulation-wise.
I'm thinking of external shutters. Surely wood has to be cheaper than double-glazing ? I'm thinking of external shutters. Surely wood has to be cheaper than double-glazing ? Why don't you consider using them as an internal application ... they look great. DH just told me the Medallion home in Mawson Lakes has external shutters. It's a long shot but you could ring Medallion and ask them where they purchased their external shutters. Just did 22 windows with them, but be prepared for perpetual dusting. Was that hugely expensive to do so many windows? I love plantation shutters and am thinking of getting them on all internal windows except for the sliding doors where I will most klikely get double roller blinds.... If the plantation shutters are hugely $$ I think it will just be double roller blinds on all windows My karma ran over your dogma Re: Shutters anyone ? 7May 15, 2008 11:14 am Yes, they are the most expensive option, aside from exotic gold trimmed curtains etc, but easily the most practical and durable (even if most are made in China).
Cost about $1200 per window on average. The most beautiful doors and furniture in the World Re: Shutters anyone ? 8May 15, 2008 12:10 pm Sort of like this ?

They won't keep as much noise out that double glazed windows do though, and you may get some light spilling in when they are closed. But seriously, when you see that, I'm not sure why you would install anything else. If we would have plantation shutters to all windows, it would cost us $20K (if we choose the most expensive one - Cedar). There are different types.. I got the quote for the most expensive one just to get the idea of the max cost to budget for window coverings. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Shutters anyone ? 12May 15, 2008 9:40 pm Cabinfever It just makes me want double-glazed AND shutters ! That's what we have! We only got got double glazing on the front windows to keep out noise and we put in shutters on as many windows throughout the house as we could afford. I'm not sure how good they are at insulating against the cold but they were brilliant during the summer for keeping the house cool. I don't find they need that much dusting either and they look sensational. Re: Shutters anyone ? 13May 15, 2008 9:51 pm VJ Quote: Was that hugely expensive to do so many windows? We're building with PD and getting cedar plantation shutters for all of our windows - with the exception of the sliding doors - and it's around 14K. We went with the people who do their display homes and got a discount because we're a PD customer. I can give you their details if you're interested. All other people quoted us around 22K so massive saving. Slab down mid Jan - now at fix stage. Re: Shutters anyone ? 15May 15, 2008 11:05 pm haywgl Wow!
