Hi all,

I'm a new member here needing some help relating to a pool fence for a new pool install in Victoria.

We are planning to use the boundary fence as part of of our pool fence but I am having trouble getting some definitive answers to some questions. I have approached fencing contractors, SPASA Vic and even the Building Commission but still nothing 100%.

Our initial thought was to run a 1200mm pool fence up to the boundary fence which is 1800mm high Colourbond fencing at right angles to fence in the the pool area. The problem we ran into with this is the requirement for a 900mm No Climb Zone measured from the inside top of the boundary fence. Obviously this is a problem as the 1200mm pool fence is within the 900mm NCZ.

Next thought was to have an 1800mm high x 1000mm wide aluminium slatted fence section put in up against the boundary fence and then run our 1200mm pool fence off the 1800mm high slatted section. Obviously we would be using a non climbable slatted fence section. Our thinking behind this is the 900mm NCZ required to be measured from the top of the boundary fence would be clear as the only thing in this area would be the non climbable slatted fence section. From my reading of the rules and regulations I believe that should be a suitable solution but no one can confirm that for me.

The final option was to run the 1200mm pool fence up to the 1800mm Colourbond boundary fence as originally planned and then extend the height of the Colourbond fence to ensure there was a 900mm NCZ where the pool fence meets the boundary fence. I have seen documentation mentioning this as a solution and it also mentions that the NCZ must extend 900mm to each side of the junction where the pool fence meets the boundary fence. That is fine in theory, the problem I have is I have not been able to find any regulations relating to what is permissible to actually use to extend the height of the boundary fence to permit the 900mm NCZ! The local hardware store sells timber lattice that I could screw to the top of the Colourbond boundary fence but it is reasonably flimsy and I don't know if it would suit. Alternatively I could bolt a lump of thick treated pine garden edging to the top of the fence that would be stronger than lattice would be.... I simply don't know what is acceptable to use to extend the height of the 1800mm Colourbond fence.

I simply cannot believe that the seemingly easy process of installing a fence is looking so difficult.

Can anyone help with some advice, links, etc?

the ncz is only measured from the outside.

The NCZ is measured from horizontal position and into your property i have just done what you are talking about as it states you are unable to control what is on the outside of a boundary fence you must ensure there are no standing points on your side.
therefore you must extend a fence at 1800mm high Yes you can use a colourbond fence 900mm into your property before lowering it to 1200mm. There was some confusion as some states listed a 1200mm fence was ok into the 900mmNCZ so long as it was no wider than 50mm but the BCA doesnt mention such wording and i would go by this
