We are hoping to build a 10 x 2m indoor heated lap pool in Melbourne. The pool would be in a 10 x5m pool house/gym which is on the side of the house proper. We have some friends who have a much bigger indoor pool - about 12 x 5m. They don't have any heating or artificial ventilation in their pool house (there are lots of open windows and skylights) but their pool only has solar heating and is only used in summer. They are actually thinking of putting in gas heating and have been told that they would need a big fan (like a bathroom fan but bigger).

Given that we want to heat the pool and use it year around would we need to heat the pool house and put in a heat recovery ventilator system like venmar or airchange - or would this be overkill. Can we do what our friends did and leave the pool house nice and open and without heating or would we run into all sorts of problems with evaporation /condensation etc.

Has anyone put in an indoor pool - any advice would be appreciated. For example is a pool blanket a good idea.

We have fitted a pool in a pool house previopusly. We fitted high clerestory windows and extraction fans. It worked well.

Good ventilation & a blanket will work well. If you use a gas heater you will be able to heat it very quickly before use. I usually use a ironiser to sanitize water

Thanks for your replies.

I take it that you don't think I need to heat the poolhouse or need a HRV or dehumidifier.

From what you say in your post I think it would be a expensive overkill.
If pool was in a downstairs room in a 2 story house where moist air could cause real damage & mould . Using a blanket & not keeping pool warm 24 /7 using ventilation will work fine.
Cheers andrew

The poolhouse shares a common wall with the rest of the house along its length and the second floor partly overlies the poolhouse.

I have also got a few early quotes

about 25-35K for a heat recovery ventilation system

about 10k for an automated pool cover.

Hello Petrous,

Have you considered a smaller pool that is more economical to run, easy to maintain and best of all designed to actually swim in? We have pools that are small in space and also have a retractable cover that completely controls humidity when the pool is covered, ventilation in the form of an exhaust fan or window that can be opened are required for when the pool is being used.

Our pools can be installed fully or partially in-ground or above ground. The standard size pool is 2.13m x 4.26m x 1.07m (internal dims) but you can choose up to our 3.05m x 4.87m or a depth of 1.22m or 1.37m.

The water quality system includes an 4kw electric heater for all year round swimming and playing. Quite a few of our customers have opted for either a combination of solar and electric or chosen gas heating or a heat pump. The better the pool is insulated the better the pool will retain the heat, especially if you cover as soon as you have finished using. There is an option for a manual or automatic retractable cover.

The Fastlane Pool is portable, so if you ever move you can take the pool with you.

Feel free to ask questions or visit our photo gallery at http://www.fastlanepools.com.au

Regards,

Tania

You should be able to get it designed with correct flow through ventilation & use correct building materials it should be fine. It needs be treated a bit like a bathroom . A heat pump can also be set up to remove humidity from the room . Considering possible risk of damage & possible cost of a dehumidifier I would recommend you consult a independent architect

Hello Petrous,

The standard pool starts at $25,500 Including 10% GST.

This price also includes the free standing pool (which you can install in-ground), water quality system, heater, 5Hp swim current generator, water return channels & water resistant remote control.

I'd be happy to forward a detailed price list if you want to email us at swim@fastlanepools.com.au

Regards,

Tania
