Post subject:  Mirror splashbacks

hey everyone,

in an old article in the SMH - they said that glass splashbacks (in kitchens) would date - and therefore to use mirrors instead.

Sort of like this
http://www.polytechglass.com.au/mirratech.htm

Anyone used mirrors before? The downside I think would be trying to keep them clean all the time as the smallest smudge or smear would show up.

Michelle - what are your thoughts?

I went for a glass splashback not because I want to be trendy but because I think it's much easier to keep glass clean as opposed to tiles + grout.

Almost everything dates - even if the "dating" is forced by the fabricators - it is how fashion based industries continue to thrive.

Stainless kicks for example - no offence to the enthusiasts here, but speak to any good kitchen designer or installer and they will tell you how "out" they are...I haven't voluntarily done a kitchen with stainless kicks in ages.

Personally I think that glass splashbacks will still be around for a while - they are a good neutral look and most importantly don't have grout - YAY!

Mirrored splashbacks? You are absolutely spot on regarding keeping them clean - every slight speck and smear would show up - I can't think of many materials less appropriate for a splash.

But hey, this is only my opinion...

Cheers,

Stonecutter……it won’t matter what you use today……tomorrow it will be out of date!!!

BUT…..in 5 years time it will be back in again! Get my drift!

I NEVER let a fashion stop me, or make me, make a decision on a selection. If you like it, and it suits the style and requirements for your home, then use it.

YOUR home should represent you; you have to feel good in your home surroundings.
Choose what you like and what you feel you won’t grow tired of in time.

I’m very much a low maintenance person myself, I know how much time we spend cleaning around the house in our free time, I have better things to do than housework!

So for me all selections have to have a low maintenance appeal! :D

Thanks for the advice everyone :)

I think what we go with will depend on the size of the splashback area as well - if it's a smaller area - I like the idea of using a mirror. But on a larger area - perhaps glass - hmmm.....

hi everyone, i have to admit, i also wanted a mirror splashback for my kitchen. When we renovated our last place, 6 years ago, i fell in love with it as i saw it in a magazine advertising www.dankitchens.com.au Funnily enough, when i buy the latest kitchen & bathroom mag, they are still advisertising that same kitchen. It is on the front page of their website infact. So Michelle is correct, styles come and go. I love it but we have chosen the glass again.
Maybe next kitchen......................

Sorry to drag this thread up again!! ::lol::

I went to a display home today and saw the mirror splashback in one of the homes. It looked absolutely AWESOME!!!! :: :: . Now we are starting to rethink whether we should change from glass splashback to mirror splashback. What does everyone think? Would this be a good idea? :th:

Has anyone done this before? For those who have it at their home, how did they find living with it?

We get glass splashback as a standard, how much do you think it would cost to change it to mirrow? The splashback will also be for the stove, would it be too hot for a mirror splashback?

What should I consider before I make my decision?

Many thanks ::lol::

They definitely add a sense of more space to the room!

Cleaning them could be annoying though as mirrors can show grease/dirt more quickly than other surfaces.

I said that to my partner, and he said no, just use windex?! :th:

I think I'd find the reflections annoying. Possibly also the glare if for example the afternoon sun comes through the window on to them, or are they somehow anti-glare? And when you've got clutter on the benches it would look twice as bad.
If they are using mirrors behind hotplates surely it must be some kind of heatproof mirror?
I'm just guessing but I think glass splashbacks will be fashionable for longer. The absence of grout gives them a practical advantage and appearance-wise they do have the wow factor. I guess just as fashions in tiles have changed fashions in glass splashbacks will also change, there's plenty of scope for that in colour, texture and pattern. Mirrors probably can also vary (clear, smoky, bronze, patterned, bevelled or patterned edges . . . y'know I'm thinking some of this is sounding a bit retro, a bit art deco even :th: ). But IMHO mirrors are a trend while glass is an innovation. That said, I thought it looked right in this display home. So maybe the main thing to consider is do you like it and does it work with everything else. If it's appropriate for the house and you love it then it will be fine. If it's shoe-horned in because it's this year's must have, you might be over it next year.

If you use any glass splashback it has to be heat proof as well (as it's close to the cooktop) so I assume the only difference with a mirror splashback is that instead of painting the back of the glass with a colour it has a silver mirror coating.

Well if he's volunteering to use the Windex himself to keep it clean then it's not a problem :-)

oddly enough, I really wanted a smoked mirror splashback in my kitchen, and have been looking into it in Adelaide.

I have a quote of $600 sqm for toughened smoked mirror, $400 sqm for glass splashback and $30 for each powerpoint cutout.

Seems about on par for what I have come across elsewhere.

In this pic.... all I see are the smudge marks on the mirror... and that's a display home. I think they look great, but it'd drive me crazy to live with it. :?

I think mirrors will date just as quickly as any other kind of splashback.

And who wants to be looking at themselves all the time? First thing in the morning while cooking my porridge could be a bit scary.

And what about the problem of the edges getting discoloured from either moisture getting in or poor manufacturing - it does happen. Can't be fixed - you need to replace the entire mirror.

Wouldn't that also affect glass splashbacks (with a painted back surface)?

Are the mirrors more susceptible to this than normal painted glass?
