Firstly you called your work a pergola. If so it has no roof sheeting otherwise it is a veranda. As to your existing roof framing being sufficient to support your 'pergola... it is possible that it complies but also possible that some strengthening of your existing roof rafters is necessary and also that blocking is advisable between house rafters behind the fascia. All that said, I agree with Adam.M that the jamming doors issue is completely separate from the roof issue. Doors jam for a number of reasons... and it seems that you have some jamming inside the house. That is almost always due to soil under your footings shrinking or swelling, but sometimes due to rotten timber stumps / sole plates or less commonly even termites. More description is needed... slab or timber floor / age of house / soil type / termite risk / roof on your pergola (therefore a veranda). Photos are very helpful too. Incidentally you need a permit for a veranda but not a pergola unless it is structurally affecting your house. Glad you asked? Hope to hear more or good luck. Re: Pergola attached to house roof 5Aug 27, 2016 12:53 pm Hi all. Firstly thanks to the replies. By the sounds of it I can eliminate the veranda (sorry for the misunderstanding). Now, the house was built in 1995 on a concrete slab. Its funny you should talk about the slab moving as I have recently replaced my garden shed slab (3m x 3m). Also the path out the front of the house and driveway are all cracked. That tells me that's there plenty of movement in the ground. But in saying that, neither paths, driveway and garden shed slab had rio in it. So, getting back too the original problem, interior doors jamming or sticking. Out of the 8 doors 4 don't shut and the sliding door has dropped. If the concrete slab has moved and causing the problem, what is my next plan of attack. Maybe a building inspector to come out? http://imageshack.com/a/img922/1460/9dcxic.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img921/1913/E2HnmA.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img923/7199/4oyWkD.jpg Re: Pergola attached to house roof 6Aug 31, 2016 12:43 pm amateur69 Hi all, I have a slight problem that i'm not quite sure about. I built our pergola some 10 years ago. It's spam 4.7m from the house and 6m wide. I used 200mm x 50mm timber (rafters). I was told by 2 builders that I would have to put support posts in close to the house to support the weight cause of such a long spam. Ignoring there advice I went a head and built it anyway without the support post close to the house because you would of walked straight out of the house and into the post. So I just attached it directly to the fascia header. Ok. Over time the doors in the house are all starting to stick or jam, won't shut. I know doors expand and contact with different climates. I've tried to fix them, but with no luck. I am now starting to think, that the weight of the pergola on the fascia header is starting to pull the structure of the house out of line. Could this be right or am I just having problems with all the doors? Pergola over 20m2 is not exempt structure and you should have had a building permit. Also, 200x50 rafters spanning 4.7m are undersized and I expect you would see a significant deflection. Your problems with ground movement need to be properly diagnosed and remedied as it is likely that the damage will continue or become worse.
