Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Apr 01, 2011 8:15 pm Do you think it would look out of place having used appliances in a new house? The fridge and microwave will already be used SS finish (but both in good condition). We're planning on having a freestanding 900mm oven and canopy rangehood and I've found higher spec used items (eg $8600 St George) for less than mid spec new item (eg $1800 Omega). I've also found a higher end Bosch dishwasher for less than the base model Bosch. Would a few scratches bother you in your new kitchen, given that after a year or 2 the new item is going to be scratched anyway. And would warranty issues on a used item worry you? Resale is also important to us as we'll be looking to move on after a year or 2 and the house is in the 700k range. Re: Used appliances in new house 2Apr 02, 2011 7:32 am Hi
I guess it depends on the saving and the condition of the appliances. If they are in good condition and reliable then it could be a good way to go. You don't want to be buying someone else's problems! Things like fridges, dishwashers and free-standing ovens can easily be replaced in the future. Cooktops that are installed in a bench might be harder because sometimes the benchtop is cut specifically for them, making future replacement difficult Paul Re: Used appliances in new house 3Apr 02, 2011 9:42 am I fail to see the net savings on compromising appliances when you consider the cost of an overall new house. Re: Used appliances in new house 4Apr 02, 2011 9:54 am We will certainly be using our old fridge, microwave and dishwasher in our new house - they still work perfectly well, why replace them? I never considered searching the secondhand market for the stove and rangehood but can't really say it would bother me to have secondhand appliances. That's what I would get if I bought an existing house to move into instead of building. Like Paulw11, I would have concerns about paying for secondhand goods only to find out later that they didn't work properly. When I was at uni I bought a secondhand microwave. When we went to the person's house to buy it they demonstrated and it worked fine. Then when we got it home we couldn't get it to work for the life of us. Finally, we said "what did they do when they demonstrated" and remembered that they shut the door with a bit of a flourish. We mimicked them just for a laugh and to our surprise it worked straight up! It turned out that the door switch was dicky and we had to slam the door shut for it to register that the door was closed! From then on whenever we used the microwave we used to slam the door with a big flourishing motion and say "It's a neeeewwww microwave!" and it never missed a beat. Good fun for a couple of broke uni students, but not something I would want to live with now LOL! Re: Used appliances in new house 5Apr 02, 2011 10:19 am For me - I would put in new appliances because you plan on selling in a year or 2 - If I was to buy a house that was 1 or 2 years old I would expect that the appliances in the kitchen be only that old. If you were staying in the house longer then I would say go for the second hand items if you are happy with them. Re: Used appliances in new house 6Apr 02, 2011 12:18 pm I've quite happily moved our existing appliances into new houses in the past, but I would never buy 2nd hand for a new house. Re: Used appliances in new house 7Apr 03, 2011 7:25 pm Well I bought a Bosch dishwasher on Ebay today, RRP is $1700 and I got it for $775 with warranty until 2014 so that was a no brainer. I'm just waiting on some hi res pictures of the St George freestanding cooker before we make a decision on it, it ends in 5 days so I won't have a chance to get to the Gold Coast and have a look before it ends. Re: Used appliances in new house 8Apr 04, 2011 11:08 pm I popped into a store and checked out the oven today, it seemed very nice with all the features, triple glazed door, good interior dimensions, warming draw, solid feel, metal knobs, etc. It was a slightly different burner configuration but their price was fixed (ala Miele/Asko) at $8600! I may need to pop down to the coast one night to have a look at the used cooker in person. Personally I find it funny that most people will be very quick to complain about the cost of something like a higher end oven yet they aren't prepared to source a cheaper unit first then upgrade later. We were going to use our old oven initially, but it completely packed it in a week before we knocked down so we just flipped for the new one now. I think if you had the appliances (like from a knock down re build) it would be financially viable but if you had to purchase second hand stuff it might not work out as cheap as you want. So long as you are happy with the look of your appliances and house over all, don't worry what any one else wants.
