some of you may know, I have strong contacts in the glass industry. I have just got back from a business trip overseas to expand my companies product line. I have always specialised in specific products and industries and have been presented with a chance from a long term manufacturer to produce decorative glass products. Im thinking screens and doors etc. These can be produced in any thickness and any type, ie- toughened, laminated, translucent blah blah etc....
they can be tinted, curved, digitally printed, cloth laminated, silk screened etc...
just about anything you want can be done.
a simple google on decorative glass doors or screens or panels etc will produce some examples....
the possibilities are endless....
im curious as to who would be interested in this idea. Eample being would be to say a digital image of a black and white image of your family portrait , printing this onto a 2.4 x 3.0mt glass panel to use as a room divider between your dining and study....
or a decorative windbreak....
maybe a new york city skyline glass door to your dressing room , or study.....
anything is possible....
The only issue would be the lead times. I am shipping approx 20 tonnes of glass to melbourne every 4-8 weeks, so one artwork was complete, the lead time could be say 10-14weeks. A long time I know, but for a 100% customised piece of artwork, then maybe people are willing to accept the lead times. They would need to be flexible,.,,,
how much? well cannot lock in any prices now and also way to many variables, like thickness, style, type, size etc...
biut lets just assume, something like 10mm, printed room divider, 2.4 x 2.0, totally customised to your design, $350-$700
I mean a stained timber or metal screen can cost you 2 x that price...
to me it doesnt matter, but im interested in how many people would be willing to customise and use glass as decorative items that they could design themselves.....for a cheap price...
of course all would carry australian standard certification.
let me know your thoughts.
and example would be like this
