Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Summit build in the South West 22Aug 01, 2014 1:15 am Just a quick update. The wood has finally arrived for our roof fix. Can't work out how they can replace the main beams under the fascias without taking the tin etc off. But they reckon they will. Shutting my eyes and going la la la until they are done!!! Just hope nothing else is compromised in the process... Chose a gorgeous 300x600 charcoal tile for our hearth yesterday which will sit at the same level as the rest of flooring and go all the way up the wall behind. That's the plan at this stage anyway. Haven't seen it done like this so hoping it works.I didnt want a raised hearth but thought it would look good to define the area. Any opinions are of course most welcome. No photos of late coz no progress. Sorry to all the pic addicts... Re: Summit build in the South West - quick update! 23Aug 02, 2014 5:42 am Fingers crossed they can fix it without too much hassle I like your idea of having a non raised hearth - we have a raised one in front of the gas fire (proper old fireplace circa 1930) which has had a reproduction surround with gas fire added and I wish it wasn't there - both the gas fire and the raised hearth. In our dining room we have the original old fireplace with exposed brick and the hearth aka slate tiles in front of it is flush with the timber floor. It works and look much much better in my view and not something anyone can trip over! Rache, your reply in Asha's thread re heating water with the wood burner heater - that has made me seriously consider having one in the house we're building. It makes so much sense if you can use the energy you're generating doesn't it? Just not quite sure I would know where to start to ask for something like that. We've been considering a split system between the living and dining area - to deal with the few very hot days in WA when an evap system isn't effective, but also double as a bit of a heater in winter. Using the area between the 2 big windows into the eaves for a wood burner would leave us no/little space for a split system though! So now really not sure what to do lol - nothing new there! Re: Summit build in the South West - quick update! 24Aug 03, 2014 2:33 am Hey MalSannie. Thanks for that. I like the idea and its good to know that it can work. I dry clothes at night by the fire and we have lambs by the fire at times, and I just find the hearth gets in the way when its a different height. You could always put a wood fire on a different wall coz you have a good sized open living area. You would also have to have a solahart hot water system which sits on the roof and your water is heated by the sun. This is then connected via copper pipes to your wood fire, either inside at the back of the box, or to a special flue cover, so when your fire is running you always have hot water. It costs about $1000 in addition to your hws and wood fire costs. Works really well, ans I just love the heat generated from a fire- it heats your walls and is so cosy! Theres so many things to consider hey- makes your head spin!! Hope that's helpful and doesn't confuse you more!! Re: Summit build in the South West - quick update! 25Aug 03, 2014 6:15 am It sounds so idyllic all the animals I think I understand what you mean - we will have a solar with electric boosted HW system by chromagen so not solahart - is it only solahart offering this? Also, does the fireplace need to be close to the water tank? I'm hoping to not have our water tank on that side of the house as it has a little bit more space to 'enjoy' - not much by your standards though You're right, the fireplace could go in the dining area rather than between the 2 'areas' thanks Re: Summit build in the South West - quick update! 26Aug 04, 2014 1:26 am Solahart is just a popular brand name - you can arrange to have a plumber install a wet bak or a flue jacket with any solar hws as far as I am aware. Our tank is on the west side of the house and fire closer to the other end. I know we will have a pump connected to the inlet pipe to the house, but I really don't know the logistics re positioning etc. as far as this system goes. Might be worthwhile running it by a plumber if you're interested coz at least then you will get all the facts. Your builder might even follow it up for you. And yes, it is very special to have animals. I spent the afternoon pulling down about 100m of fencing - only about 800m to go! Sun shining , dogs playing and stock in the paddocks. Just love it! Re: Summit build in the South West - quick update! 27Aug 04, 2014 2:18 am Thanks for the reply Rache - we're in Perth in October/November so hopefully we'll get the opportunity to figure it out then! Can't wait to see your hearth tiles it'll be lovely Re: Summit build in the South West - quick update! 28Aug 05, 2014 1:28 am Thanks MalSannie. I reckon your trip to Perth will be like a whirlwind! Re: Summit build in the South West 29Aug 05, 2014 1:47 am SO... I've fallen in love with these kitchen industrial barn pendants...I mean seriously in love!! Only problem is I am not sure which red one I like best - yes it's gotta be red I've decided! So thought I'd get the opinions of the H1 experts! All thoughts most welcome.

I am still leaning that way myself as I think the deeper red will be stunning, and its still got a bit of class about it. And yes you are so right about the wood fire issue - I have had one for as long as I can remember even when I lived in Perth, but it is important to consider cutting and storage on a suburban block. And I guess the cost of wood. Again, we have enough on the property to last us for probably 15 years and our fire goes 24/7 from May to the end of September. Very lucky. And I forget that in the city you must consider all of these things. Thanks for your comments. Re: Summit build in the South West - which red pendant light 33Aug 06, 2014 1:14 am MalSannie I also like the 1st, and the 4th ones. How many are you planning to get? Is this for over the bench? Love the doors, imagine it'll look lovely doubled up Thanks for your input MalSannie. I am planning on having 3 over the island bench, either 10 inch or 12 inch diameter. It's difficult to picture what size would be best. The bench is about 2.4m long - I want them to be a feature but not be overbearing if that makes sense. AKB has made some good points about the wood fire too. You may have already considered these things, but if not, its certainly worth a thought. I hope I haven't misled you Re: Summit build in the South West - which red pendant light 34Aug 06, 2014 1:45 am Rache you haven't misled anyone and I still vote a wood fire over none . Also bear in mind ours is an open fireplace where as the fires you have now days the wood lasts a lot longer I know our combustion fire in our old house you could go to sleep with it going and put new wood on the embers in the morning ....you can't do that on am open wood fire place viewtopic.php?t=62083 Re: Summit build in the South West - which red pendant light 35Aug 06, 2014 1:54 am No 1 is the best one.
