Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Oct 09, 2023 12:32 pm Hi there, we have a older weatherboard house in Sydney and the traffic/plane noise is increasingly getting to us. Whilst we are thinking of a KDR in about 5+ years time, what are some effective ways in the meantime to reduce the noise indoors? One thing I could think of is changing our windows, but would that help much? Thanks!! Re: Home Noise Reduction/Soundproofing 2Oct 09, 2023 12:56 pm Depending on the windows, but some of them can be really sound proof to make a difference. E.g. I have triple glazed windows and even if you keep shouting right behind the window or door, I won't be able to hear much when I am inside. Although I think changing the orientation of the windows (away from the traffic side) might make even more sense in your case. Re: Home Noise Reduction/Soundproofing 3Feb 27, 2024 3:07 pm Sorry missed the reply - I don’t think we can change the orientation of windows and we’re not planning a major reno now. Thinking of getting something like Magnetite for the windows facing the noise of the traffic. Wondering if anyone has experience they can share? What are other things we can do to our existing house to reduce noise? Thanks! Re: Home Noise Reduction/Soundproofing 4Feb 27, 2024 6:42 pm Perspex screwed to the window architrave frame internally, airtight. The large air gap makes a huge difference and it’s cheap. The Branxton hotel had this over hundred year old double hung windows and I couldn’t hear B doubles rolling past 10m away. You need aircon though! Re: Home Noise Reduction/Soundproofing 5Feb 29, 2024 1:10 am Upgrading your windows to soundproof ones, like triple-glazed, can make a significant difference. While changing window orientation might not be feasible, exploring options like Magnetite for noise-facing windows is a good idea. Another cost-effective method is installing Perspex internally on the window frame, creating a large air gap that significantly reduces noise.
