A concreter has stuffed up our job and to fix it, he is asking us to pay for extra costs and materials & before i dig my heels in, want to know if his ballsy request has any merit?
We hired a concreter to create some floating steps for our front yard. We've paid 50% upfront. The steps will eventually be tiled.
He has poured the concrete and after pulling down the formwork, we observed that the bottom step is lower than the council footpath. In fact, it's 90mm below. It was brought to his attention & our concerns about it flooding. He said to see how it goes over the next week with the rain
It doesn't take much imagination to guess what happened.
The bottom step has sat under water for the last week & we have been racking our brain to figure out a solution & the only 2 things i can think of is (a) starting over, or (b) adding concrete to each step to build up the height, in this case, about 150mm on each step.
He still has quite a bit to do before finishing, but i asked him to come back today to look at the step & figure out a solution. He didn't have any & so when we pitched both of ours.
He said that he would have to speak with some other concreters to see if adding more concrete on top is safe and has longevity.
An hour later, he texted me saying that it can be done (with doles etc), but we need to discuss extra & material costs. It nearly blew me over. I can't tell if he thinks im a pushover or if really thinks he is entitled to the extra costs.
So before i have a face to face conversation with him, want to know where i stand.
Thanks
