Yep I have another tiler coming, will get him to get his level out and see what he says... I wish I knew more about this stuff! Re: Dee & Dan's First Home Build -HGWA- Tiling Dilemma 1125Nov 27, 2014 3:22 pm I don't even know what screed is but it's included in our package so not a decision we have to make. Just get a few opinions before you decide. I don't know too much about screed but I definitely think getting a few extra opinions would be helpful. Good luck Re: Dee & Dan's First Home Build -HGWA- Tiling Dilemma 1127Nov 27, 2014 4:04 pm Good luck, wish I could give you some advice. Let me know what you end up doing and if you have a tiler recommendation when all is said and done. I've got a few names, but not yet committed to one yet. I received quotes a few months back so we could include it in our mortgage. Every tiler I spoke with had a different opinion re: screeding and level slabs etc I'm really hoping to get away without it because it is so much more expensive, but you're right about spending the money if necessary. We've got light coloured tiles too, though more of a matte finish but I imagine similarly it will show every imperfection. Re: Dee & Dan's First Home Build -HGWA- Tiling Dilemma 1128Nov 27, 2014 5:47 pm dee_77 They're 600x600 polished porcelain tiles Melsie. How are yours going without the screed? I'd be a bit worried about tiles cracking over time if not screeded. especially with the bigger tiles which are obviously to be a lovely feature of the home. The rental I'm currently in has a few cracks. Floor doesn't feel uneven to walk on though. Re: Dee & Dan's First Home Build -HGWA- Tiling Dilemma 1129Nov 27, 2014 7:18 pm Love, love, love the tile choice! Looks great against the front door, I'm sure they will look amazing throughout! Where are you buying your tiles from ours are tile 88? Re: Dee & Dan's First Home Build -HGWA- Tiling Dilemma 1131Nov 27, 2014 7:27 pm The tile is superb, it will look amazing when laid. If it were me, I'd pay the money because it isn't an easy fix if it goes pear shaped. But yep, also get a second and even maybe a third opinion ... Tiler #1 could just be yanking your chain because you're female and what would you know Re: Dee & Dan's First Home Build -HGWA- Tiling Dilemma 1133Nov 27, 2014 9:25 pm our floor was so bad at the last place that it need concrete grinding and screed to try and get it level, still didnt get it perfect, but the wood was floating and able to cover up the imperfections. Wife was not happy with commercial concrete grinder an associated dust in our new home. It took place after handover, good thing was builder paid for it. Re: Dee & Dan's First Home Build -HGWA- Tiling Dilemma 1134Nov 27, 2014 9:30 pm I would see if you could get the builder to cover some of the cost... It won't be easy seeing as you've had handover and paid the final payment. But the builder is supposed to give you a floor that is suitable for purpose. And if you are putting screed down they've failed. Late to the party but still with the celebratory spirit...Congrats on finally getting your keys dee!! I thought the builder was responsible for providing a level surface for your flooring - surely? It's a hard one Dee but it's also quite a bit of extra money Thanks everyone for the advice and for sharing your experiences. After having a good look into it and think about it we have decided that screeding is the way to go. I found a nice big crack in our slab while cleaning there on Saturday (not sure if that's a normal thing to happen or not?)...But that pretty much made my decision for me. I would hate for my pretty tiled floor to end up all cracked and broken and sad, so just going to dish out the extra $$ and make it happen! Locking in a date today so hopefully in the next couple weeks our shiny new floors will be in!
