Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- gazebo update 62Nov 14, 2014 5:49 pm Hi Lorri, no, it's not a kit. Each log was felled and carted from a property nearby. We are painting it today with the UV paint. I am excited by the hexagon design because its exactly what i had in mind to match the house. It will have the same roof, CLB surfmist. We are helping a local carpenter build it. The more we do the cheaper it is. So we have sanded and with the UV coating it's two things we can do, as well as DH moving logs onsite. He might help with the roof as well but doesn't have a real head for heights so that's doubtful... Cheers I'm happy the site is helping with ideas Also scored a win with a local earthmover who has some more rocks for us, he'll deliver them as he drives past one day. It rained really heavily yesterday (or was it the day before) and the run off area from the driveway drained into the "dry" riverbed just as we hoped it would. Yay! Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- win some, lose some 66Nov 21, 2014 10:39 am Win: We have almost finished planting the front garden. But we can't landscape around the big pond yet, until the gazebo is finished. In the last week or so we've planted emu bushes, bacon-and-egg bushes, scaevola (it's the new one with the three different color flowers, lovely) and some more westringias. We planted two eremophilas into the dry riverbed, the kind that don't mind boggy conditions. We also planted out our crepe myrtles and put our broms (bromeeliads) into the ground. They are the kind that don't mind full sun. Nearly all my kanga paws are flowering now and look really healthy. Lose: One of my native foxgloves was dying. I dug it up to see what was wrong cos it was a lost cause. I wondered if it was beetles or nematodes but the roots hadn't grown at all -even though it had flowered beautifully. I had been pouring the water in when I saw it struggling, but the hole was still very dry, which was a surprise. The other foxglove is doing great. And my christmas tree (Nuytsia floribunda) died, bummer. They are such touchy things!! We have 4 more in pots but will have to be very careful where we plant them. This is a pic of a very old one in the bush, they are stunning when in flower. They can take quite some time to grow to this height. Floor joists and bearers are in, ready for the decking. The deck will be butted up to our exposed agg verandah. http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/WestAussieforeva/SANY0070_zpsdef9bdf8.jpg The roof has been pitched. It's clever how it's done. The timbers will bear their own weight once the central pole is removed. One more timber pole to be fitted.... http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/WestAussieforeva/SANY0069_zps12a91ab2.jpg http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/WestAussieforeva/SANY0068_zps8abf803f.jpg ...and then we will be painting again, before the roof goes on! Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- gazebo roof timbers 68Nov 25, 2014 5:40 pm Bummer about the nuytsia! Hopefully the next one will take. The gazebo looks impressive! Lots of hard work I imagine. Quick question, how long did it take your kennedia to grow around your tank? I can't seem to find the original pic. viewtopic.php?t=72683 Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- gazebo roof timbers 69Nov 25, 2014 5:55 pm What sort of a Christmas tree is that - it looks stunning. It must be native to WA. Something to consider if you plant them out in the soil. Stewie Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- gazebo roof timbers 70Nov 25, 2014 6:15 pm trixee Bummer about the nuytsia! It has grown half way around in that time, we need to put more wire around for it to spread further.... Stewie D What sort of a Christmas tree is that - it looks stunning. It must be native to WA. Stewie Hi Stewie, yes it's our WA version of an Aussie christmas tree cos they flower from Nov-Dec and the orange is almost fluoro orange, it looks like christmas lights!! Yep we cultivated it with a lavender in a pot and it was doing well. It's a form of mistletoe which doesn't kill the hosts. They are just very, very difficult to cultivate...Horticulturalists have studied the relationship between the nuytstia and the surrounding vegetation and found it also draws from everything around (including grasses). WA has the best wildflowers!!! Its like what is in my mind, just have to convince hubby we need one. Oh but first we have to build the house lol. Cheers Lorri Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- gazebo roof timbers 75Nov 27, 2014 9:37 am Stewie, DH bought a little plant last week and planted it out yesterday, but forgot the name. Our knowlegeable friend came by yesterday and identified it. Ceratopetalum gummiferum!! Lorri, this pic is for you: the old rotunda (1897) in King's Park with million dollar views. I've loved it since I was a kid. Our's is much more rustic and rather less scenic, (just a tad) looking over our dry riverbed and ponds http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/WestAussieforeva/rotunda_oneKingsPark_zpsdfe03343.jpg Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- gazebo progress 76Dec 01, 2014 8:53 pm So we have pretty much finished the dry riverbed and surrounds... So do grass trees, but it will be a long time before ours look like these natural beauties. Yours is coming along very nicely. Cheers Lorri trixee Yes, I hope it keeps on doing well...So far so good! It was a shocker moving some of those rocks into the riverbed!! DH used the trolley with the solid tyres and we managed it between us, but there were a couple of big ones he hauled by himself that had me worried for him. He forgets he's not 30 something anymore! Re: Landscaping our half acre heaven- gazebo progress 80Dec 02, 2014 12:16 am I can imagine! When I demolished, I wanted them to save me a specific rock.
