Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Apr 14, 2016 11:05 am I have 45 x 140 joist hangers with recommended 24 nails per hanger. Pryda recommend 35mm x 3.15mm nails on the box of hangers. Having read the Standards for external fixing which state N3 wind rating (my region) is 3.33mm dia (softwoods) nailed in depth of 10 times nail diameter. The next sized nail up from 3.15 is 3.75mm which means 37.5mm long but they come in 35mm lengths which don't comply. At 24 nails per hanger am I being too pedantic in going for the 3.75mm? Or do the 3.15mm not comply and therefore shouldn't be used? Re: External deck joist hanger nails 2Apr 14, 2016 11:39 am Any fasteners must be external grade. If fixing into treated timber, the fasteners must be suitable for the treated timber. I would not use nails but exterior grade (Tek) screws. I am too old to hand nail anymore. (My 35 year old timber balcony collapsed recently. The galv steel bolts had been eaten away where in contact with permapine.) Re: External deck joist hanger nails 4Apr 14, 2016 8:51 pm Australian Standards sometimes call up items that are not commercially available. Companies like Pryda sell fasteners and in the real world you are limited to what companies like Pryda manufacture and sell through your local hardware outlets. Pryda have there own fastener tables which usually include options for nails, bolts or screws. Just follow these manufacturers tables (for your wind category choose the fastener that works for you and your terrain category. ( I also built in a N3 area a nd for some fixings this meant using bolts instead of nails) Seconded; we just used these last weekend to build a small deck. They worked perfectly as we have bluestone in the area where we wanted to build so digging down was not… 8 9117 Assuming you've modelled the TB8, TB10, TB12, TB2 & J1 joists/LVLs there, it appears as per drawing to me. There maybe should be an additional J1 between TB10 and T12 if… 3 31904 1 10186 |
