We received a quote of 5k to level our site behind the two retainng walls being created. By my calculations we need about 110m3 fill to get to level spread around a 580m2 block. Five grand to push dirt around seems really expensive? Is there some sort of trick involved or is it just a matter of sourcing the fill and renting a dingo? Does it need compacting? I think I'd be getting some quotes from someone who at least has a bobcat to push it around. Using one of those "widowmakers" aka a Dingo is going to be a very long drawn out process, and is likely to leave you with a slightly uneven block. Size of equipment is relevant when you are trying to level a block, i.e. size of bucket doing the spreading of dirt. If you are filling for underneath the house slab, then it really does need some compacting there. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Each load of fill is going to cost you $200 - $300. There's $2 - $3k there and that's assuming your calculations are correct on the amount of fill required. As for compacting, yes it should definitely be compacted to some extent, if you don't and even if it's garden area it will compact itself over time and cost you more down the track to fix it up. Do it right, and do it once is my motto. By all means get more than one quote but don't cut corners on important things like compacting. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Filling a site behind retaining wall 5Jul 02, 2014 10:52 pm brissyguy Thanks bpratt, that's a good point. I would say $5k is a reasonable amount for the work involved and having someone compact it correctly.
