If you know anyone wanting to buy down the Huon - I have two properties I need to sell there Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 22Aug 09, 2012 5:02 pm Yes, a big pantry is wonderful!! You won't go wrong with one of them Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 23Aug 09, 2012 7:52 pm ^^ +1! Once the walls start being filled in the house seems to "grow" again. There was a bit of a delay the past couple of weeks -- the company that makes the laminated beams for the flooring and rafters had their glue machine break down. But the builder expects the second floor beams to arrive this Monday, so the scaffolding has been hired and is going into place: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Scaffolding worries me a little. It's so ridiculously expensive to hire, and you feel as if there's a clock ticking on everything that follows. The builder's pretty good with scheduling... but even then, he can't predict if a supplier will be late with delivery (as with the laminated beams). Let's hope it all falls into place from now on! *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 25Sep 05, 2012 2:53 pm Floored!
The second storey floor has now gone down, and I've got a really good idea of how the bridge will look across the loungeroom -- great! The proportions seem to work really well, and the cantilevers into the void from both mezzanines help to break up the vertical expanse. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'm still a little concerned the lounge/dining room is a tad small (5x7m) but I guess it'll be easier to heat (glass half full!). But the home theatre room is absolutely perfect... and after all, the home theatre is the reason I'm building this house. Everything else is just supplementary... *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 26Sep 05, 2012 3:05 pm You are going to have a nice view between those trees!! Well done on getting a floor Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 27Sep 05, 2012 4:05 pm 5x7 and an open plan kitchen or separate from the kitchen? Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 29Sep 06, 2012 5:29 pm I think it will be fine. And if not, get a smaller table and use a corner suite ( a new sort, with a chaise..not a burgundy 1988 sort!) Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 31Sep 10, 2012 4:26 pm "Are you building a church?"
The rafters are going in, and I can finally get a good idea of the size of the main building... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It's certainly a lot more ecclesiastical than I'd originally thought (a passing neighbour asked if I was "building a church?")... but that's pretty much the style I was looking for anyway. I even have some 18th Century Spanish cast iron church windows to put... somewhere. They should feel right at home. *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 32Sep 10, 2012 4:30 pm it starting to take shape and look more like a home... it can only get better from here.... very exciting Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 33Sep 18, 2012 5:18 pm Batten down the hatches!
The dormers are now in place and the roof battens are going on, in preparation for the roof: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The thing I was most concerned about were the proportions of each element: the size of the secondary roof compared to the dormers; the width of the barge boards and fascia; the verticality of the windows. There's only so many times you can draw the building -- seeing it in the flesh is something completely different. But fortunately, I think it's spot on... *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 34Sep 30, 2012 12:20 pm Beam me up
The framing's almost complete (seemed to take a long time, but I suppose it's a complicated build) and the bridge timbers are starting to go up: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It's hard not to run around inside the house like an excited kid when noone's looking. It's like having a cubby house for grown-ups! *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 36Sep 30, 2012 4:20 pm Run until your heart is content! Nothing wrong with letting the inner child out..... The cedar windows have arrived, and I did a test stain on one of the smaller ones to see how it would turn out: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The colour's "dark oak" which seems to produce a semi-rustic red/brown on the cedar (depending on the absorbancy of the timber). Not bad. Although I'm already cursing the timber glazing bars on the larger windows Today the builders began cutting the barge and fascia, and covering them in the copper sheeting: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The copper covering is to get the fire rating without having to compromise the look -- this way I can have a nice wide bargeboard, rather than a nasty colourbond one. Must admit, I've never seen bargeboards and fascia done in copper... I'd call this one of the "measured risks" I've taken with the house design. Let's hope it isn't too naff, as it certainly wasn't cheap... *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 39Oct 06, 2012 11:47 am Hmmm... so I've just done a check of the Stegbar windows that have been delivered on site. Turns out the windows that are supposed to be BAL19 fire rated have been glazed with 4mm toughened glass, instead of the required 5mm. I may have to send them back to Melbourne. I've heard Stegbar's been screwing up a lot of orders lately (coming from the delivery guy)... I would have expected more from such a well known company. Building the Ascot 35 with Carlisle Homes in Pasadena Estate, Clyde VIC My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59776 Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9559 Fellow Perth dweller.
