I've got dark, exposure grade, rustic bricks and they've got mortar all over. Have been using a heavy duty pressure cleaner (petrol powered) and strong hydrochloric solution but it is taking too long. I'm having to use a wire brush on each brick individually+pressure clean each brick individually. Would love to heat if something else works better. Re: What's better than hydrochloric acid? 2Feb 20, 2011 7:41 pm hydrochloric is strong. if you want it more strong dont mix as much water. WHat are you using to hose off? you using a pressure cleaner - what pressure is it. Also be carefull about using wirebrush it can leave rust stains. Also when are we going to see some pictures?? You havent really given people anything to see. Re: What's better than hydrochloric acid? 3Feb 21, 2011 8:17 am If you're just removing mortar, I've heard of a product called Back-set (I think that's what it was called?) which is supposed to dissolve cement/concrete back into a slush/mud which you can then just wash off. I've been meaning to buy some to clean up a lot of my tools and a concrete mixer, however I haven't gotten around to it yet so unfortunately I can't tell you how well it works. Might be worth looking into though! Re: What's better than hydrochloric acid? 4Feb 21, 2011 8:26 am For tools, you might want to try Crete-wash. For walls, the trick is to scrap off all large lumps. You just want the acid to work on the last thin slice of mortar. Don't use acid stronger than 10 parts water to 1 part acid or you could "burn" the bricks. Better to apply more 10:1 solution than less of a stronger solution. Also, remember to saturate your bricks with water first. You don't want the acid water mix to soak into the bricks, just work on the surface.
