Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Mar 05, 2010 10:53 am Hi, I am seeking recommendations for a draftman. I am building in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. I have a fairly mature floorplan of what I'd like to build. Finding a draftsman has been harder than what I'd thought it would be. One person who was recommended to me I can not get to return my calls. The other has a 2month+ backlog of work, and is asking thousands to do my drafting. Can anyone recommend me a good quality, reliable, reasonably pricing draftsman? Regards Re: Recommendation for a draftsman - Melbourne 2Mar 05, 2010 11:02 am Hi Rotanon, I'm in the same boat. Also from the northern suburbs of Melbourne. I used a draftsman that was recommended to me. I was told 3 weeks which turned to 5 months. I paid for the plans and when I got home they were not what I had asked for. So I guess I'm looking for someone else and already out of pocket $ 2,000 Re: Recommendation for a draftsman - Melbourne 3Mar 05, 2010 11:50 am I used a draftsperson on my house who lives in Eltham, and since then have used her on 3 or 4 other occasions, without hassles. Send me a PM if you are interested in getting her details. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Recommendation for a draftsman - Melbourne 4Mar 05, 2010 9:51 pm rotanon / Doulie, We have a fantastic draftsman, who also did the energy rating for our place (if you need). I went to 4 different people, he was not quite the cheapest, but I cannot fault him. He is based in Glenroy. The one thing I asked all of them was, 'Will you be ok ( patient) with the million stupid questions an owner builder will ask?" ...and he has. So far I have given him 2 referrals in the last few months, 1 from a good friend, and one from my brother. They have both hired him! This tells me I was right about my choice. He also gave me a bottle of plonk for my efforts, what a good bloke... FYI - The engineer he referred me to has also been great, and the cheapest I had quoted. All the plans and Engineering are currently with the surveyor for approval. PM Me if you need details Plans Done Feb 2010 Permit Done 23 April. Set out Done. Scrape and Excavations Done. Footings Done May 10th. Now, to find a brickie.Got one! Sub-floor bricks & Garage Done - 13th June Sub-floor installed 28 June (?) Re: Recommendation for a draftsman - Melbourne 5Dec 03, 2012 6:25 pm We used a very good Building Designer / Draftsman (PAUL) and would reccomend him to anyone. He gave us some advice and a quote over the phone and was prompt with his service. He runs a small design practice, which suited us as we don't like getting shuffled around and prefer to speak to the one person about such an important topic. I think he charged us $2k-3K in total which invloved a lot of good advice, a design and some Working Drawings. This was right on the initial quote and he didn't try to insert the GST in later which seems to be a common practice in the building industry to up the bill from the intial quote. He also recomended a builder who was a real gentleman and provided a very good quote. We ended up building ourselves and the drawings ensured it was a relatively smooth process. I suggest you chat to someone like him before proceeding. I think his website is www.HouseDesignSolutions.com.au but please check as this could be incorrect. I think his website was orange. A recommendation is useless if it comes from a person that doesnt realise they themselves have been had. Oh boy, have I seen this so many times! If using someone recommended, I would still keep your eye on the ball. Re: Recommendation for a draftsman - Melbourne 9Dec 18, 2013 7:34 pm Here are the contact details for the guy we used. I think drafties are usually around the 3-4k Mark if you know what you want.
