Post subject:  TV program looking for owner builders and other projects

Hello Owner Builders and those thinking about taking the leap!
I am a Researcher working on a possible new program for TV which will follow owners through the design and build process as they build their dream homes. We are looking for projects of all budgets, styles, sizes across australia, but as we will focus on the owners through the whole process we are particularly interested in owner builder projects or at the very least owners who are passionate about the project and want to be on site often, and have great input into the process.
We are only interested in projects that offer something a little different or unique, be it that you have an interesting story behind your reasons for building, you are building in a beautiful or challenging location, you're building with interesting materials, renovating an interesting or historical home, converting an existing building into a home etc etc. We are open to other ideas too!
If you'd like more info don't hesitate to email me & likewise please contact me if you have a project you think we may be interested in.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Natalie

Hi Natalie,

Sounds like "Grand Designs in OZ". I hope you are as successful as the UK programme - I love that show. You shouldn't have too hard a task finding material once you start looking, I think the problem with a show of this type is the long lead time before the finished product is available - still perhaps you could start your own OB in the downtime :)

oo now assuming this has now been allowed and the thread won't disappear again. This looks interesting. I'll send the new link to "Johnson" who was interested when I messaged him after seeing your first post on Thursday. Natalie his build is possibly exactly what you are looking for. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=8865&highlight=wychwood

He's building in Tassie. Hasn't started the actual build yet. He's made a blog as well at http://www.wychwood.net.au/

I hope the show goes ahead. I know I'm not the only fan of Grand Design the tv show on this forum so having a local show that looks at interesting builds in Australia would be very popular.

(Thanks to K for tracking down this thread!)

Yes, we're busily trying to get our new home off the ground. All the preliminaries have been done (plans, Council approvals, basic groundwork, estimations) -- now we find we're at the mercy of builders and their quotes. It seems that showing our plans to builders and saying "get this to lockup and we'll take over" is too much for some. Just in the past week, the one builder we'd been counting on pulled out.

My wife and I are trying to stay enthusiastic, but with the current state of builder quoting and their timeframes, we aren't having much luck. We were hoping things might settle down a bit with the impending global recession, but the Government's recent boost to new homes may even make it worse.

I'd *like* to think we'll be in the new home for Christmas 2009... but at this point I really have no idea. *sigh*

Is it just in NSW or are you looking across the country?

Hi all,
Yes, just confirming we are looking for projects across Australia. We'd love a real variety of locations and scenery.
Thanks
Nat

great idea for 7 maybe,, if only they actually paid the subjects of the show,, they want us to submit application detailing why we should be on their show so they can make money from it but they wont offer to pay anything.

I suppose with so many people just dying to get their face on t.v you wouldnt have to pay. i'd be worried though as mentioned in previous thread about hot property the editors may not tell the story as it actually happened instead portray things differently to add a bit of drama to the show.

 would help with getting some of those fancier fitting we all find after we work out whats wanted.... or even work with getting the build finished faster!

So does the show plan on coming back ever few months till its finished? cause the only problem I see is that as an owner builder I only get to work on the weekends (wich will only change when I get some of the lighting finished.) which would be a long research time (I'll be using my whole 2 years from the looks of things)

Hi Natalia

We may just be able to help!

My partner and I are owner building our house in Perth Western Australia. So far we have our development approval and our technical drawings are complete and currently sitting with the Structural Engineer. We should receive them back by 4th December to then be submitted to council for our Building License. I would say by end of Dec we will have approval and will begin our house as soon as the Christmas period is over.

We are very excited yet a little apprehensive at the same time. Somehow the design turned into the Taj Mahal (2 Storey, 4 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 2 ensuites and a Rompus Room) and so a little nervous about the size of the project we are taking on especially seen’s we have never done this before.

We are also building our house using Insulated Concrete Form which is not a new product but new to Western Australia. Western Australians are brick all the way so not quite sure how this aspect of the building will go. But we are eager to give it our best shot. We love the idea of a more insulated house and being as environmentally friendly as we possibly can. I am even doing a Garden Design course next year to see if we can implement some sustainable options into our garden. Well obviously this will depend on budget however at the same time you dont necessarily need to spend lots of money to be environmentally friendly!

Through the initial part of the project I have realized how much there is to learn so am constantly looking for help from others so I can totally appreciate the idea of your show. Hope it gets off the ground
