you will need a splitter not a booster.. and those prices hell i would be living a nice cosy life from each install.
at TV point should be 80ish per run, and Data should be arund $125 per run. tho that is my guestermation/ please factor in for things price.... i can do 10 data sockets and two lead ins for FTTH places or $1500ish TV shoudl be around $400 if i was the contractor for both which there shold only be one person doing these both.
unless they are also quoting a hills hub solution in those quotes then they are way over priced...

Hi guys,
What is a good price for 8 data points, 3 phone points and 3 TV points?
I'm with a volume builder and i'm allowed to subcontract this work. At what stage is best for the install?
Can it be done after settlement?
Regards,
best to get done during construction after the sparky & plumber have been in after construction would be a retro fit = more money.
really 11 "data points" and 3 TV points around the $1700 mark

I am also about to start building in a Velocity Smart Estate in Doreen. (The Briar's). Seems I will be paying for something that I may not use. At least only compulsory for limited time to get the 1.5k. Think I will have to knock on a couple of doors up the road to get the pro's and con's. I was thinking basically most rooms would need to be wired even if it's for resale value. New technolgy stressful.

Hi All,
I just want to clarify whether FTTH (Fibre to the Home) that are implemented in Telstra smart community estate (Telstra Velocity) is the same as this NBN (National Broadband Network) stuff, which is the future of telco industries these days?
I guess there's ups and downs on FTTH. Ups: ready for NBN (Ready for High Speed Fibre broadband). Downs: Telstra monopoly (Prices gone up to the roof).
Actually might think to start separate thread for this.

Hi Tempura,
There is not enough information available on the government's NBP to really assure it's fibre, given the government's predilection to flip flop I wouldn't bet any money on it.
But if it is rolled out and rolled out using fibre it will only service areas that are currently not being serviced, so in summary FTTH is FFTH, the wire is the same.
The whole Telstra monopoly thing is a pain, but take into account if they did not invest the infrastructure you could be like many many other people in new estates that cannot get broadband at all, even basic ADSL alludes many people. There are 17 houses in my street in South Morang, only three can get internet....

so i guess it's fair to say that those estate that is in Telstra velocity will enjoy the NBN, whilst those that are not, can hope that the fibre enter to their estate? what do you think?

Hope is the right word, it took me 6 months and nearly 20 orders to get ADSL 1 here. absolutely crazy, Australia ranks so poorly for internet service on copper wire, however FTTH ranks 3rd world wide
More costly especially with Telstra but you have to take into account it has cost (T) about 6k per block + infrastructure to provide so they need to make it back

Nathan,
From your old post in this thread, you mentioned ONT to be installed inside the house. is this the grey box, on which all the modems/routers are connected to?
Last week, I called Telstra in regards to Telstra Velocity plan and he strongly emphasized that if we're building a new home in Telstra smart community, to advise the builder that smart wiring should be installed/implemented inside the house; this way we won't have the grey box inside the garage. He also mentioned that it might incur additional cost, but it's worth it.
Is this your understanding?
And also, i noticed that with FTTH, no modem is required (from Telstra website). just need to plug in the computer via CAT5 to the socket (let's say 1 computer in 1 house, no networking required). Is this correct to your understanding?
Do you know any electrician that know well how to install smart wiring in Sydney area?
We got our Telstra Velocity up and running today after weeks of painful dealing with telstra but that a story in itself, But what we have is a grey box from telsta on the outside of the house, another telstra box inside the house with battery back up, and then the Hills hub unit to distribute everything, Telstra sent out a modem that sits inside the hub. All our free to air tv also comes through telstra velocity all you need is a digital set top box to get the signal so there is no need for a arial. When I locate my camera I will take some photos.

Cheers Lou! It seems what you're getting is how the Velocity (FTTH) meant to be installed.
ONT at the outside of the house. PSU at the inside of the house (with the battery back up). HD to split everything up (modem sits inside this HD).

Hi all,
Does anyone know whether the builder when doing the smart wiring near completion (such as the installing the Starserve and wiring of Cat6 cables to different rooms etc.) will also be arranging for Telstra to install the ONT and PSU and make the connection to the Starserve (or the home network)? If they don't, then it would be very difficult to test the network during the pre-completion inspection because nothing has been connected yet. I would have thought that smart wiring would not any different from water or gas wiring, such that whoever doing the wiring should at least tested whether water/gas flows and comes out okay to ensure that they had done the job correctly.
It would be good to hear from anyone who had being through the process of completion with a builder where the builder also included smart wiring in their contract.

Comparing water and gas to smartwiring is not the best way to put it ncc1701d. Personally smartwiring is the biggest 'con' in the industry to this date. Everyone is looking to have some form of smart wiring put through there house but to me i have never seen wires as to being 'smart.' Its the devices that you are connecting to with the wires that should be classifed as having the intelligence to doing the job you are after. In terms of wiring up your house to do basic networking with cat6 there really be no real problem in doing this its as simple as setting up your network router/modem and have the cable locations coming back to a network switch. But Starserve personally i'd be running the other direction.

i think the people who did your wiring will have wirings basically hanging outside where the ont is suppose to go, when telstra come and install the ont, they connect those wires and bang you should be up and running (thats what i have read so far). also from speaking to telstra, they will install the ont and psu once you have ordered a service such as your telephone, bigpond or foxtel. otherwise for telstra it'll be pointless putting an ont as no services have been installed.

We are in Harrisons View in Laurimar, our speeds are between 39 and 52 mbps. We have spent countless hours on the phone to Telstra and have even been told we are getting great speeds!!!! we were told we would have at least 100, but are now being told that only 70 is guaranteed. I can't remember seeing that advertised anywhere. Three hours of phone calls today and a different answer everytime, not happy at all. Monday they are going to test the pit at the front of the house, they have said if they get it up to 70 that is all they have to do. We are on the hightest plan, but that means absolutely nothing. We know of others in the area that are getting up to 139 which would be great.
